BEMIDJI -- Emergency workers in Beltrami County are preparing for more trains, including crude oil trains, to run through the area -- and with them, more risk of a spill emergency. Chris Muller, emergency management director for the the county, recently completed a countywide Railroad Information and Emergency Plan, in preparation for a potential emergency incident on area railways.
BEMIDJI -- As state legislators debate how far to go with legalizing medical cannabis in Minnesota, statewide advocacy groups stopped in Bemidji on a tour calling for reform to the state's stance on sticky-icky. BEMIDJI -- Community members rattled off ideas Tuesday for what the Bemidji Carnegie Library should be used for if efforts to move and renovate it prove successful. The Save The Carnegie Committee concept for the building includes space on the top floor to be used for public gatherings like dances or community meetings, and space on the bottom floor to be rented out to private businesses as a means of taking in money to cover the building's operating costs.
BEMIDJI -- The city of Bemidji on Monday threw its hat into the ring of local companies, colleges and government units trying to turn the Mayflower Building into an incubator for area startup business. RED LAKE -- Red Lake Tribal Secretary Donald Cook Sr. on Tuesday denied Chairman Floyd Jourdain Jr.'s assertion Cook instigated the banning of the CEO of the Indian Health Service hospital at Red Lake from reservation lands. "The issue came before the council because of numerous complaints of employees... being terminated or removed from their positions," Cook said "It wasn't like somebody instigated (the ban).
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji City Council voted Monday to draw up a purchase agreement with McDonald's operator Corey Klinefelter to buy a plot of city-owned land next to his restaurant. Klinefelter said he needed a decision from the council so he could work with McDonald's corporate leadership to renovate and expand the location on Highway 197 south of downtown.
BEMIDJI -- The Red Lake Nation has banned a federal Indian Health Service official from entering tribal lands. Mark Karzon, CEO of the IHS hospital at Red Lake, was barred by an April 8 decision by the tribal council from entering the reservation, which also prevents him from reaching the hospital campus. Tribal Council member Roman Stately said the ban was due in part to complaints against Karzon from the Red Lake community that Karzon was disciplining his employees without just cause. BEMIDJI -- A rogue lumberjack or lumberjacks have done some unauthorized landscaping at the city's disc golf course- at the price of six decades-old trees.
