BEMIDJI -- A judge has dismissed the bulk of the second lawsuit over annexation of property from Bemidji Township to the city of Bemidji, according to court documents filed Tuesday. Judge Jana Austad dismissed all of Bemidji Township's claims against the city, Northern Township and the Greater Bemidji Area Joint Planning Board, except for a claim against the city seeking an explanation of how the city formulated tax redistribution numbers. In her decision, Austad said the claims in the second lawsuit were too similar to the claims in the initial annexation lawsuit, which is pending appeal.
BEMIDJI -- Bemidji mayoral candidates met Thursday for their final debate ahead of the Nov.4 election next week. Incumbent Mayor Rita Albrecht faced off against challenger Jorge Prince, and candidates for City Council -- Don Heinonen and Dave Larson -- also participated. Voters filled Bemidji City Council chambers to hear the forum, and their attention was rewarded with one of the liveliest of the four mayoral debates this season. Pressure in the waning days of the campaign season was evident as Albrecht and Prince crossed swords multiple times during the night.
BEMIDJI -- Nearly 200,000 Minnesotans have requested absentee ballots in 2014 as of Thursday, a release from the Secretary of State's office said. More than 125,000 of the ballots were turned in and accepted. "The 125,358 accepted absentee ballots to date is a 61 percent increase compared to 77,677 at this time in 2010," the release said.
