BEMIDJI -- The University Heights development project that promises student apartments and commercial space across the street from Bemidji State University on Wednesday received final zoning approval. The Greater Bemidji Area Joint Planning Board approved rezoning the land where the project will be built -- on the former site of Bemidji High School -- and granting the project a conditional use permit/plat approval. According to a JPB planning report, the conditions imposed on the project earlier in the permitting process called for defining the property line between University Heights and ne
BEMIDJI -- Reporters normally hate corrections, but the media flocked Wednesday to a bill introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives that prompts a correction more than 80 years in the making. Since the days of Prohibition, a statue of Christopher Columbus has stood on the mall of the Minnesota State Capitol, with a engraving reading "To Christopher Columbus, discoverer of America." John Persell, DFL-Bemidji, authored a bill to change two words on the engraving so it instead reads "landed in America," thus recognizing the fact that American Indians were here thousands of years before Co
BEMIDJI -- The Beltrami County Board on Tuesday voted to complete the first phase of the roughly $5 million renovation of the county jail -- leaving subsequent phases in doubt. Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp said the additional requirements on the project being stacked on from the Minnesota Department of Corrections made parts of the other phases unfeasible to the county.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji City Council on Monday moved closer to deciding whether Nate Mathews or Jeff Cadwell will become the next city manager. The two are finalists in the process of choosing a replacement for retired city manager John Chattin. Mathews is city administrator of Staples and Cadwell is city administrator of Mahnomen. Kanabec County Coordinator Patrick Christopherson was a finalist but dropped out of the running for personal reasons before Monday's round of interviews.

BEMIDJI-- Beltrami County officials will hold a special meeting of the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday in response to a state notification on staffing at the County Jail. An email from the office of Beltrami County Administrator Kay Mack announcing Tuesday's meeting said it was "for the purpose of reviewing the Jail Remodel Project in light of the recent Department of Corrections notification regarding the jail operating capacity and the jail staffing needs" but did not specify further what the notification was about. Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp declined to comment on the specifics
BEMIDJI -- Miss Northern Lakes winner Kailee Ogden educated BSU students Wednesday about rape culture and consent to sex, using her own experience as an example. The talk was hosted inside the Hobson Memorial Union by the Student Center for Health and Counseling as part of its "Safe Spring Break" series of activities. Ogden opened her presentation with a heart-rending statistic: one in four women and one in seven men will experience either rape or attempted rape before they graduate college. The reason so many rapes occur, Ogden said, is because of rape culture: collective attitudes "that e
BEMIDJI -- Twin Cities-based Hubbard Broadcasting announced Wednesday it had closed on a deal to buy 16 radio stations in northern Minnesota, including five in Bemidji and six in Brainerd. Under the deal, initially announced in November, stations of Paul Bunyan Broadcasting's parent company, Omni Broadcasting, are being sold to Hubbard Broadcasting. Omni Broadcasting stations located in Bemidji, Brainerd, Wadena and Alexandria will become Hubbard properties. Former Paul Bunyan co-owner Lou Buron told the Pioneer in November he chose to sell because he was looking to retire.
BEMIDJI -- After some five hours of interviews Tuesday, the Bemidji City Council whittled five semifinalists for the vacant city manager position to three finalists: Patrick Christopherson, Nate Mathews and Jeff Cadwell. Christopherson is county administrator at Kanabec County, Mathews is city administrator of Staples and Cadwell is city administrator of Mahnomen. Candidates Mark Sievert of Fergus Falls and Larry Kruse of Thief River Falls were ruled out. Once interviews were completed, the council took less than a half hour to decide who would move on to the next round of interviews March
BEMIDJI -- Bemidji Mayor Rita Albrecht is looking to create a coalition of mayors to work together on northern Minnesota issues. Although the coalition is still in the development stages, Albrecht said it stood to unite Bemidji with neighboring cities within 40 miles or so that might otherwise see the First City on the Mississippi as their rival. "Part of the reason I'd like to do it is because I want those communities to think of Bemidji as their partner, not their competitor" Albrecht said during Monday's City Council meeting. Albrecht said the Northwest Minnesota Foundation is interested
