BEMIDJI -- In the shadow of a state decision Thursday to study alternative routes for the proposed $2.6 billion Sandpiper crude oil pipeline, politicians weighed in on whether to wait for new and different pathways through Minnesota or go ahead with Enbridge Energy's original proposed plan. Enbridge, a Calgary-based energy company, has said studying alternative routes could delay the project by at least three years, and building on a different route could mean as much as $455 million in additional costs. One of the biggest political skirmishes over the line so far has been between U.S.
BEMIDJI -- Minnesota Speaker of the House Paul Thissen, along with Reps. John Persell, DFL-Bemidji, and Roger Erickson, DFL-Baudette, took a break from campaigning Wednesday to send out a call for more people to submit property tax credit applications. DFL legislators previously promised to lower property taxes through more aid to towns and cities, as well as credits to taxpayers like the ones Thissen, Erickson and Persell were touting in Bemidji. The 2014 tax credit applications for homeowners and renters are due Aug.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji Axemen was sold to a mostly-local ownership group, general manager Adam Barnhardt said Tuesday. Former majority owner Chris Kokalis sold his stake in the professional Indoor Football League team to four owners: three locals and one from Roseau. Barnhardt declined to publicly identify all of the new owners, but said former minority stakeholder Ross Ladehoff is one of them. The new group is in full control and the IFL approved the sale on Tuesday after it was completed July 29, he said. "We're hopefully going to be around ...

LAPORTE -- Organizers in this town of 111 residents have raised thousands of dollars for a proposed trailhead on the Paul Bunyan State Trail: money from private donations, government grants, even a bake sale. Fundraisers garnered a big enough percentage of the total project cost -- slightly less than $200,000 -- to begin construction on the proposed park, which includes a shelter, picnic tables, grills, a playground and the 14-car parking lot. So far, $23,588.01 has been raised from donations from individuals alone, about $212.50 for every citizen of Laporte. The shelter is projected to be
BEMIDJI -- Endorsed DFL candidate for Secretary of State Steve Simon on Wednesday stopped by Bemidji while campaigning ahead of the Aug. 12 primary. Simon chairs the Minnesota House of Representatives' Elections Committee and on Wednesday touted a new "no-excuses" absentee voting law he chief-authored that takes effect for this year's election. The law removes a requirement that absentee voters swear, under threat of perjury, they will in fact be absent from their regular polling place on election days. "That is the prize that I worked on for a long time," he said.
BEMIDJI -- Former longtime DFL state representative Matt Entenza flew into Bemidji on Tuesday while campaigning in one of Minnesota's most-watched primary races. Entenza is challenging incumbent State Auditor Rebecca Otto in the only major DFL primary contest. On Tuesday, he talked about his new push to prevent pension privatization, and Otto's claim he's just running for auditor to cement a future attempt at the governor's chair. Entenza said his campaign's last big push ahead of the Aug. 12 primary vote would center on public employee pensions.
BEMIDJI -- State Auditor Rebecca Otto on Wednesday said her opponent in the DFL primary, Matt Entenza, was responsible for the unusually negative tone in the race. “I don’t want...
