ST. PAUL -- The year was 1981, and Dave Runkle had just moved into his Carman Bay lakeshore property along Lake Minnetonka in the St. Paul area. The home was perfect, he said, and the waterfront access onto the lake was clear and pristine. Nearly 30 years later, Runkle said the shore along his property is completely weeded over and no longer glimmers the way it used to the day he and his wife, LuAnn, moved in.
BEMIDJI -- The American Indian Resource Center at Bemidji State University unveiled an exhibit Thursday that explores the relationship between American Indians and the governments of the United States and Minnesota. "Why Treaties Matter: Self-Government in the Dakota and Ojibwe Nations" is available for public viewing until Aug. 22, where it will then continue on its statewide tour.
BEMIDJI -- Driving to work, Brian Shaw can't help but think about the weather and what it'd be like to fly high in the sky with the birds and clouds, given that day's climate conditions. Having a passion for airplanes since he was a young boy, Shaw says flying is a hobby that's near to impossible to not think about, even with the constant hustle and bustle of day-to-day activities. "It's one of those things I say you're born with," he said. "It's kind of an addiction; once you get into flying, you'll always want more and more."
BEMIDJI -- It will be all about quick draws and precise aim this weekend at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds, as shooters from across the region shoot it out in a mounted shooting competition. The second annual Raid on the Gold Mine Minnesota Get Together will draw cowboys and cowgirls, young and old alike, for two days of quick shooting and high-speed horsemanship Saturday and Sunday.
BEMIDJII -- Exchanging musical knowledge and cultures, ambassadors from Bemidji State University have returned after spending a month in China. Travelling to Weifang University -- located on the Shandong Peninsula in China -- the musical group, known on campus as Voltage, embarked on the learning experience May 23 to learn more about the Chinese language and culture, as well as to teach and perform electronic music with students there. Del Lyren, a professor of music at BSU and the musical director of Voltage, accompanied the students on their journey.
BEMIDJI -- In 2005, two volunteers set out on a mission to reconstruct a language native to the Bemidji area that had slowly deteriorated throughout the centuries. Nearly 10 years later, Michael Meuers and Rachelle Houle have come a long way in resurrecting the Ojibwe language here, enlisting more than 150 area businesses to participate in the Bemidji Ojibwe Language Project. "The Ojibwe language is the culture of our land," Meuers said. "There's something to learn here from their culture."

BEMIDJI — Children’s laughter, the smell of fresh grilled food and the roar of carnival rides filled the air Thursday as the community gathered on the Lake Bemidji Waterfront to celebrate the July 4 holiday. Beginning this past Wednesday, the long holiday weekend has brought live entertainment, parades and family activities to town, as the 69th annual Bemidji Jaycees Water Carnival continues until Sunday. "Everything has been perfect," carnival chairwoman Michelle Gonzales said.
BEMIDJI — The Beltrami County Historical Society re-opened its exhibit area after six months of construction Wednesday with a new exhibit that features the county’s extensive past. The “Trails Through Time” exhibit features a variety of displays that cover Beltrami county history from the time the glaciers receded to the mid-20th century.
BEMIDJI — The Commemorative Air Force in St. Paul is hosting an “educational flying museum” through the holiday weekend, according to Jim Gilmore, a CAF volunteer pilot and air show coordinator. The museum is part of various aviation activities this week at Bemidji Regional Airport, with the Mississippi Headwaters Flyers of Bemidji sponsoring the various flight exhibits.
