CASS LAKE — The laughter of children and the buzz of adult conversation lined downtown Cass Lake Saturday morning, as the 13th annual Rib Fest began its last day of events, which began with its annual parade. "Rib Fest has been family time," Sheena Cabritit said as she and her three-year-old son sat on the street curb, waiting for the 11 a.m. parade to begin.
BEMIDJI - As the grand opening of the new downtown beer brewery nears, the founders of the brewery are preparing to brew more than just craft beer. Bemidji Brewing Co. is slated to celebrate its grand opening Friday, and according to Tina Hanke, one of the four founding members of the brewery, the new business will not only create an exciting gathering place for locals downtown, but will help to boost the area's economy.
BEMIDJI - Minnesota's economic future is set to make a rebound, a top official from the state's economic department said here Thursday. Kevin McKinnon, director of business and community employment for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), addressed members of the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities during their annual summer conference at the Sanford Center. In the keynote speech, McKinnon presented a brief overview of department programs and how they have impacted the state's economic sector.
BEMIDJI - There may not be any snow adorning the hills of the Buena Vista Ski Area this time of year to attract thrill chasers, but the family owned ski business is hoping to fill the hillside with crowds this weekend regardless. The first annual Buena Vista Music Festival hits the slopes Saturday, with six musical acts from around the state taking the stage.
CASS LAKE - The aroma of freshly grilled pork ribs will fill the air this weekend, as the 13th annual Cass Lake Rib Fest kicks off Thursday, with events continuing through Saturday. All Rib Fest activities - besides the parade - will be held in the field at downtown Cass Lake, located at the intersection of 2nd Street and Elm Avenue. "We have a lot of great things going on and it's going to be a fun time to enjoy with the family," Sue Schafroth, director of the Cass Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, said.
BEMIDJI — Art in the Park has become a family hotspot for the Meerdink family, attending the festival for the past 12 years as part of their vacation. "We just love Art in the Park," said Kammie, mother of two who hails from Champaign, IL.
BEMIDJI -- When Will Weaver sits down at his favorite spot at the Bemidji State University library to work on his latest writing project, he doesn't think about if it might attract the attention of filmmakers. "The fiction writer works to publish their story, but where it will go no one knows," Weaver said. "You sort of take your chances knowing sometimes lightning strikes."
WALKER -- For Darrell Olson, and many others, Moondance Jam is more than just a classic rock festival. "You can't explain something like this until you've been here to experience it," Olson said Thursday from his campsite. "I'm not a fan of crowds, but this doesn't feel like a crowd -- you get to know people." And this year, organizers expect Olson to get to know a lot more people.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra will kick-off its 75th concert season Saturday with the annual summer pops concert, "Summer Celebrations." Performing at the Bemidji High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m., the BSO will be accompanied by musical guests Aaron Meyer, a rock violinist, and guitarist Tim Ellis. "We love playing with orchestras and we love traveling to new places," Meyer said. "We've had wonderful times performing in the Midwest and this sounds like a great opportunity."
BEMIDJI -- Every car has a story to tell. Ask Kermit Anderson, a founder of the Paul Bunyan Vintage Auto Club, and he'd say automobiles can be the source of any interesting conversation. "There's a lot of history there," Anderson said. Anderson, along with the rest of the about 60 member vintage auto club members, will celebrate that history during their 30th annual car show Sunday at Bemidji High School, with a diverse range of activities scheduled during the event.
