The Bemidji High School girls basketball team returns to the court tonight to host Detroit Lakes at 7:30 at the Fieldhouse. It is the only BHS team in town tonight. The boys hockey team heads to Crookston for a Mariucci Conference test with the Pirates while the swimmers go east for a dual at Grand Rapids. All three stand a good chance of winning. The Bemidji Lumberjacks boys basketball team snapped its three game losing string Tuesday, scoring a 75-65 victory at Crookston. Bemidji broke a tie late in the second half on two steals and layups by Ryan Rude and rode the strong free throw shooting of the Woods brothers down the stretch to widen the gap to its final 10 points. Rude hit a season high 20, taking second to Carey Woods who led the Jacks with 24. Czar had 12. Josh Baldock hit 19 to pace Crookston.

Warmer weather and rare ample parking brought out one of the better crowds of the year. It witnessed the two arch rivals stage an end to end battle from the first whistle to the last with neither team backing down an inch. Each goalie had 33 stops in the game with Miah Graves perhaps the star of the contest. He was beaten only on a 5 on 3 power play in the third period, cutting the Bemidji lead to 2-1.

The Bemidji Coca Cola Pee Wee A hockey team reached the final four of its 18th annual Paul Bunyan Invitational Saturday, closing pool play unbeaten with a 6-2 win over Sioux Falls, S.D. It was joined by Rogers, Crookston and Grand Forks to begin bracket play Saturday night. The title games in the four brackets will be played at BSU today starting at 9 with the Championship bracket final at 2:30. The consolation finals for third place will be at the same times at the BCA. Hermantown, Ft.
Duluth East's shooting guard Dyami Starks became the 51st member of the boys basketball 2,000 Point Club this week as he scored 29 points to lead the Greyhounds to a 78-72 win over Forest Lake in the semifinals of the Granite City Classic. The four year starter now shows 2,002. The club is on offshoot of the 1,000 Point Club created in the 1950's by Sportswriter Lefty Ranweiler of Willmar. It has become far more meaningful since the advent of the three point basket and the expansion of cage schedules from 18 to 26 games. Starks, who will play at Bemidji Feb.
Bemidji High School's 24 varsity sports teams enjoyed varied success during 2009. The nine winter teams led off the year led by the girls basketball squad, which made another strong run at gaining the state tournament, a drive that came up a bucket short at the section semifinals in a 61-59 loss to Elk River. Bemidji ended 23-4, led by sophomore center Kayla Hirt, who scored a school record 658 points, averaging 25.5 and raising her two-year total to 1,054. The Bemidji High girls basketball team blew a 20 point lead late in the game Tuesday but rallied at the end to pull out a 63-59 decision before a fine turnout at the Fieldhouse. It was the seventh win in eight starts for Bemidji and dropped the Spuds to 2-4. For a half it appeared to be a runaway as Bemidji vaulted to a 29-9 lead late in the opening stanza and was still in front by 13 at halftime. Bemidji High closes shop for the holidays tonight with five teams in action . Two will be at home with the girls basketball team hosting Moorhead in a critical game while the boys hockey team entertains International Falls. On the road are the girls hockey team at Hibbing, boys basketball at Grand Rapids and the gymnastics team at the Fargo South Invitational. The layoff will be a brief one, however, with holiday tournaments beginning Monday when the boys hockey team opens three days of play at the Denfeld Invitational. On Tuesday the boys cagers face DeLaSalle at Grand Rapids before going
