CLOUD -- Following its 6-5 extra-inning win over Rogers on Friday afternoon, the Bemidji American Legion baseball team emerged from its pool with a 2-0 record after a 4-2 victory over New Ulm later that night to advance to the four-team championship bracket at the St. Cloud Chutes tournament. Solid at-bats were key for the Centaurs in the game in order to get the win against lefty Aaron Portner, New Ulm’s starting pitcher.
CLOUD -- The Bemidji American Legion baseball team opened the St. Cloud Chutes tournament on a high note Friday with a 6-5 win over Rogers in a nine-inning nailbiter at Joe Faber Field. The Centaurs were first on the scoreboard when Isaiah Biehn knocked an RBI single and Brandon Lussier grounded out to score Matthew Johnson in the top of the second inning.
PRIOR LAKE -- Bemidji High School junior Nic Geiger shot 196 of 200 targets at the MSHSL Clay Target State Tournament in Prior Lake on Friday, leading the Lumberjacks with a score of 97 in the team tournament in the morning and following with a 99 in the individual round in the afternoon. Following Geiger in the team portion of the day were Tate Hammitt and Nicholas Peterson, who each shot 96, while Brandon Morris and Ian Ekstrom posted an 89 and a 91, respectively.
BEMIDJI -- In between the Bemidji High School spring boys tennis season and the fall girls season, Bemidji tennis doesn’t take a break. Instead, Bemidji Summer Tennis kicks off the week after school ends, and players from first grade to high school take to the courts to work on their game.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji High School trap shooting team has shot its way to state. Finishing with a team score of 487 at the end of the weeklong 2018 Minnesota State High School Clay Target League Trap Shooting Championship in Alexandria on Tuesday, April 19, the Lumberjacks easily made the 40-team state tournament field by tying for fourth place with three other teams.
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- The Bemidji American Legion baseball team put on an offensive clinic Tuesday night in a doubleheader against Thief River Falls, leading to a 16-7 win in game one followed by a bunch more scoring in the nightcap. In the day’s opener, the Centaurs spread the offense throughout the game, scoring more than one run in five different innings.
FERGUS FALLS -- The Bemidji American Legion baseball team opened its season with a split at Fergus Falls on Friday night, with both games ending with a 3-2 score. Henry Michalicek led the Centaurs (1-1) to the win in game one by going 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, while Caleb Carlson took the win on the mound with nine strikeouts over a complete seven-inning effort.
BEMIDJI -- There were only six days between the end of the Bemidji High School baseball season and the American Legion baseball season, but the Centaurs were already ready to get back on the field for practice Monday, June 11.
COON RAPIDS -- Recent Bemidji High School graduate Abbie Kelm is making the most of her final appearance at the Class 3A girls golf state tournament, shooting a 76 to tie for seventh place after day one Tuesday at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids. “I don’t think it really changed my mindset,” Kelm said of her senior year experience at state. “I think it was just to continue playing well and just keep up what I’ve been doing pretty much all season.”
NORTH MANKATO -- Top-seeded Faribault defeated the Bemidji High School softball team 8-0 in the quarterfinals of the Class 3-A softball state tournament Thursday afternoon at Caswell Park in North Mankato. Falcons pitcher McKayla Armbruster threw a no-hitter and struck out 17 batters to advance Faribault to the semifinals. The Lumberjacks will next play No. 5 Rocori in a consolation bracket semifinal Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. This story will be updated.
