DETROIT LAKES — During Friday’s season-opening games at Detroit Lakes against the Lakers and Thief River Falls, Bemidji softball coach Brad Takkunen played just about everybody on the roster because he needs to see what his players can and cannot do. The results were mixed as the Lumberjacks pounded 22 hits in the two games but defensively made numerous mental mistakes that proved costly. The result was a 12-11 loss to Detroit Lakes in eight innings and a 9-6 victory over the Prowlers. “We definitely didn’t play ‘end of the season’ softball,” Takkunen said.
BEMIDJI — The Little Amik indoor meet at the BSU Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center traditionally is one of the largest track competitions north of the Twin Cities. This year 33 boys and 33 girls teams were registered for Tuesday’s edition, and 66 teams is about all that BSU track coach Craig Hougen and his staff of volunteers can handle. By sheer numbers of competitors, a 66-team meet beginning at 1 p.m.

January is always a busy month for the Bemidji High School winter sports programs and this year, because of the recent postponements caused by the dangerously cold temperatures, there is little time for the athletes and coaches to catch their breath during the final two weeks of the month. The mad dash begins tonight when five teams will be in action.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji wrestlers began a busy weekend on a positive note Friday as the Lumberjacks dumped Barnesville 39-25 in the opening match of a triangular with Barnesville and Columbia Heights. In their second match BHS blistered Columbia Heights 65-15. Friday’s matches served as a tune-up for the weekend’s main event -- today’s Rick Lee Invitational.
