BEMIDJI — Ryan Hirt has been selected to pitch for the North team in the 40th annual Minnesota High School Baseball All-Star Series June 20-21 in Chaska. Hirt, who graduated this spring from Bemidji High School, will join his North teammates in their tournament opener 6 p.m. June 20 against the Metro West. On June 21 the North will face Metro East at 10 a.m. and the South at 3 p.m. The North’s roster also includes Austin Skjefte of Moorhead, Drew Sannes of Brainerd and Jackson Gessell of Grand Rapids.

REDBY, Minn. -- A 41-year-old California man was killed in a head-on collision with a school bus Tuesday morning on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. According to a release, at 7:31 a.m., the Red Lake Department of Public Safety responded to the motor vehicle-school bus crash on Minnesota Highway 1 near Redby, Minn. There was one occupant of the vehicle, the make and model was not released, and 19 school-aged children in grades K-5 on the bus, the release said.

BEMIDJI — The 14th annual Kraus-Anderson Walleye Classic presented by Seven Clans Casinos is a competitive, live-release walleye fishing tournament and returns June 7 to Lake Bemidji and Lake Irving. A total of 100, two-person teams will again compete for more than $60,000 in cash and prizes, including a first prize of $12,500. The event is the largest payout for a team walleye tournament in Minnesota, organizers said in a release Friday. Anglers will start their engines at 7 a.m. with the weigh-in starting at 3:30 p.m.
BEMIDJI — The BSU women’s basketball team announced Wednesday it had inked the 2013-14 NJCAA Player of the Year to a Letter of Intent for the upcoming season. Sarah Durand, a 6-foot forward/centern from Warren, will play for the Beavers starting in the 2014-15 season. BEMIDJI -- A Cass Lake couple died Saturday night in a head-on crash in Cass County. Lisa Collins, 47, was driving a 2003 Kia Spectra while her husband, Timothy, 46, was a passenger in the vehicle. The Kia was headed south on Cass County Road 75 and Leech Lake Route 438 when it was struck by a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Michael Stangel, 27, of Cass Lake, according to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol. MARSHALL — The time and date of the BSU baseball team’s Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at Southwest Minnesota State has changed. The doubleheader, originally scheduled to be played today at Alumni Field in Marshall, has been pushed back to Thursday due to rain in the forecast in the southwest Minnesota region.
