• If you enjoy the music of the 50s and 60s, "stroll" on over to the amphitheater of Lake Bemidji State Park. A family group from Akeley -- Northern Bass -- will be rockin' and rollin' at 1:30 p.m. as part of the 2014 Lake Bemidji Concert Series. Headwaters School of Music and the Art, in collaboration with the Lake Bemidji State Park, present these summer concerts. Admission is free for each concert, but you will need to have a valid park pass or purchase a day pass at the gate.
BEMIDJI -- July is almost gone, but there still time left to settle down with a good book on the pontoon or the deck and enjoy some summertime reading. Speaking of pontoons, have you seen the book "Goodnight Loon" by Abe Sauer, which is soon to be sold at Big River Scoop in downtown Bemidji? For parents and children alike, the book is a welcome change, and where else could you find three walleyes eating rhubarb pie. There are lots of other surprises between the covers, along with the colorful illustrations.
The Watermark Art Center and Paul Bunyan Communications present one of Bemidji's most popular events this week -- "Art in the Park" -- which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The 47th Park Fine Art and Craft Festival will once again be staged on the shore of Lake Bemidji in Library Park. More than 100 artists and vendors will showcase ceramics, wood furniture and accessories, glass paintings, fabrics, weaving, jewelry, paintings, etc. Vendors will sell great food and there will be music by Pat Surface in the Spiritwood Music Tent all day, both days.
I hope you all had a good Fourth of July holiday, and today finishes off the holiday weekend with plays and music. • The Paul Bunyan Playhouse presents "The 24th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" musical comedy today at 2 p.m. at the Historic Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji. It's a musical comedy where adults playing the characters of quirky teens who freely deliver double entendre, hilarious dialogue and lots of caring. All the cast is embroiled in the organized chaos of a spelling bee under the supervision of the hapless vice-principal played by Paul Reyburn.
BEMIDJI -- Justin Holley considers himself lucky. Many of the Bemidji author's recent short fiction stories have been picked up by regional and national anthology publishers and magazines. Holley, who also is the vice-chair of the Region 2 Arts Council, said he grew up writing poetry and song lyrics. He started writing short stories in 2006. "I think I wrote 250 thousand words before I could say I was ready to seriously start writing," he said. "Those stories were all a learning experience for me as I learned sentence structure and many other grammar rules that are with me today.
Today's soloists for the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra concert -- Tammy Hensrud and Korliss Uecker -- have been generous with their time and talents this past week. They gave a career talk for students at the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts; a recital of operatic music accompanied by Beverly Everett at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids and a vocal master class at Thompson Recital Hall at BSU.

BEMIDJI -- In two concerts in the area this week, Lauren Pelon will blend her craft of storytelling and music from America's indigenous peoples coupled with the diverse wave of immigrants in the 1800s and their gifts of folk music and dancing. "Music from the Backyard & Front Porch" will be hosted by the Kitchigami Regional Library System at 7 p.m. Friday at the Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji.
