BEMIDJI -- It took Bemidji four innings to solve the riddle of Alexandria right-handed pitcher Danny Kuhn but the Legion baseball team's bats eventually came to life. Ryan Hirt's walk to open the home fifth sparked Bemidji to four runs in its final two at-bats and that late surge gave the Legion a 4-1 victory in the opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader at the BSU diamond. In the nightcap Hirt stepped onto the mound and allowed only two runs and one hit over four innings.

GRAND RAPIDS -- The shorthanded Bemidji Legion baseball team finished 0-4 over the weekend at the Grand Rapids Invitational. The tournament attracted many of the top teams in the state and Bemidji faced four of the state powers on Friday and Saturday. "I think many of the teams in this field will challenge for the championships in their district tournaments," said Bemidji coach Nate Blumhagen.
BEMIDJI -- Ryan Sander allowed only three hits in seven innings of pitching and spearheaded the offense with two doubles and two singles as the Bemidji Blue Ox stopped Cass Lake 9-1 late Wednesday at the BSU diamond. The visitors used a walk and double to score in the first inning but Sander shut the door on the Reds the rest of the way.
BEMIDJI -- Briana Rueter is the new head girls gymnastics coach at Bemidji High School and the recent Bemidji State University graduate is excited to begin her new duties. "I am inheriting a team with very passionate gymnasts who are excited to learn. They are driven and I am excited to have the opportunity to push them to their limits," Rueter said. "I have had coaches who have helped me set goals and helped me attain those goals. I enjoy winning but I'm more about setting goals and that is what I want to do with the girls.

COON RAPIDS -- Morgan Williams of the Bemidji girls golf team opened her state girls Class 3A golf tournament shooting 44-38-82 Tuesday at Bunker Hills (36-37-73) and sits in a tie for 24th heading into Wednesday's second round. The sophomore struggled off the tee on the front 9 but kept the damage to a minimum with an effective short game. On the back side she had all aspects of her game working well and finished that nine holes with a birdie, two bogeys and six pars. Williams will begin her final round around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

COON RAPIDS -- During Monday's practice round at Bunker Hills, Bemidji's Morgan Williams sent her second shot of the day into the woods. Lumberjacks girls golf coach Jeff Nelson's advice after the shot was for Williams to throw the ball onto the fairway and forget the wayward shot. "A golfer won't learn anything about the course by shooting from the woods during a practice round," Nelson said. "All Morgan has to do this week is relax. ST. PAUL -- Bemidji senior Sam Carlson placed fourth Saturday morning in the 1600 in the boys Class 2A state track and field meet. Carlson completed the race in 4:15.50 and the time broke Bemidji's previous school record which was set by Brian Kraft in 1981. Saturday's state champion is Eli Krahn of Stillwater who completed the mile in 4:13.54. Carlson will return to the track at Hamline University Saturday afternoon to compete in the 800.
