Naonto "Notty" Sylvester, 92, of Perrysburg, Ohio, formerly of Park Rapids, died Monday, April 6, 2009 at the Manor of Perrysburg. She was born on Dec. 12, 1916 in Paulding County, Ohio to Delbert and Lillian (White) Venderly. In 1936 she married Ed Sylvester. They had three children. The family lived in Indiana until 1951 when they purchased Round Bay Resort on 3rd Crow Wing Lake. They sold the resort and, after living on the lake for several years, they moved to Park Rapids in 1992. She was involved with the Park Rapids Senior Citizens Club.
Patricia "Patty" Lynn Tuma, 57, of Pine River, formerly of Walker, died on Sunday, April 5, 2009 at the North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale. She was born on June 15, 1951 in St. Paul to George William and Dorothy D. (Balsley) Stumbo. She grew up and attended school in Bloomington, Akeley, and later graduated from Park Rapids High School. She went to work at Ah-Gwah-Ching State Nursing Home in Walker. She worked in the dietary department for many years before working in the laundry department.
Ardis Ione Westrud, 64, of Willmar, died Sunday, April 5, 2009 at her home in Willmar. She was born to Egbert and Evelyn (Paulson) Elvehjem on Jan. 12, 1945 in Glenwood. She grew up on a farm near Brooten and attended West Lake Johanna Lutheran Church. She graduated from Brooten High School. On June 27, 1964 she married Gerald Westrud in Brooten. The couple made their home in Minneapolis. Her husband died May 1, 1975. She then lived in New Hope and Fridley before moving to Willmar in 1980. She was employed at Molenaars in Willmar.
Alberta Leckner Benton, 76, of Park Rapids, died Thursday, April 9, 2009 at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul. She was born May 11, 1932 to Ralph and Sarah (Sills) Leckner. She married Mel Benton on April 17, 1954. She is survived by her husband; five children: Wayne Pearson, Teri Thompson, Mark (Linda), Ron, and John (LuAnn); three brothers: Ralph (Jean), Ron (Sherri) and Walt (Kathy) Leckner; three sisters: Ida (Ed) Steidler, Irene (Larry) Hennig and Harriet Beaverlander; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Audrey. Visitation: 11 a.m.
Mildred A. Johnson, 88, of Park Rapids, died Monday, April 6, 2009 at Green Pines Acres Nursing Home in Menahga. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 17 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids. Rev. Ken Nyhusmoen will be the officiant. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 10 at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood with Pastor Micha Driscol officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. James "Jim" Edward Sharp, 73, of Menahga, died Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Green Pine Acres Nursing Home in Menahga. He was born on July 15, 1935 to Edward and Lucille (Lyman) Sharp at Wesley Hospital in Wadena. He grew up on a farm in Wadena County and attended school at White Oak in rural Sebeka. After school, he worked doing drywall and trazzel work for Aragoni Brothers. He worked in many cities including San Francisco and Oklahoma City. He married Carol Sherk on Dec. 28, 1956.
