DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — An influx of outdoor mice has area homeowners on the verge of mouse madness. Mouse traps and mouse bait have been selling at record levels, exterminators are staying busy and people who have never had house cats before are bringing in “mousers” to join the fight. Brady Neros, of rural Hawley, Minn., said his family has lived in the area for 34 years and never dealt with mice before.
MAHNOMEN -- Terry Tibbetts won more than 65 percent of the vote Tuesday to become the next chairman of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe. He defeated Mindy Iverson 1,279 votes to 674 votes, or 65 percent to 35 percent. “I’ll be the hardest working, most honest and thorough chairman that we’ve seen for years,” Tibbetts said. He thanked his supporters and campaign workers, singling out “Moss” Tibbetts, a nephew who worked hard on his campaign and “is like a son to me,” he said.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn.— Not everything has what it takes to become a state symbol. The lowly leech in its lake weeds and crawly wood tick in its underbrush can only gaze wistfully at those state symbols that so proudly embody what it means to be a Minnesotan — the soulful loon is the state bird, bone-building milk is the state drink, the elegant fluttering monarch is the state butterfly and the tasty walleye is the state fish.
WHITE EARTH, Minn. -- For more than 20 years, Erma Vizenor has been a force to be reckoned with on the White Earth Reservation. From the early 1990s, when she was a prominent member of the group that brought down the Chip Wadena-led government, to a few weeks ago, when she was forced by her political enemies to resign the tribal chairwoman’s office, Vizenor has been in the thick of the action.
MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- A Moorhead, Minn., man has been charged with animal cruelty and chasing a wild animal in a motor vehicle in the Labor Day weekend drowning death of a buck on a northwest Minnesota lake. The two misdemeanor charges were filed Tuesday in Mahnomen County District Court.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. -- The man who founded Minnesota’s Zorbaz restaurant chain has died. Tom Hanson launched Zorbaz more than 45 years ago in a former candy store on the Detroit Lakes beach. Back then, he was a 23-year-old drama and debate teacher and coach, and Zorbaz was only open in the summertime, when school was out.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. -- Of the three breeders mentioned in the Minnesota breakout of “The Horrible Hundred 2015: Puppy Mills Exposed,” two of them are in Becker County in northwest Minnesota. The report, produced annually by the Humane Society of the United States, lists John and Lyle Renner’s kennel and Michelle Sonnenberg’s kennel, both off Highway 34 in rural Detroit Lakes, as repeat offenders.
DETROIT LAKES — Becker County Human Services Director Nancy Nelson resigned after clashing with other department heads, the county administrator and at least one county commissioner on policy and budget issues. Other commissioners lost faith in her ability to answer questions about her department or follow through on promises to find the answer and get back to them. After filing two Minnesota Data Practices Act requests, Detroit Lakes Newspapers gained access to a redacted version of the extensive investigatory report conducted on behalf of the county by Kristi Hastings with the Pemberton, S
