Bemidji State University's effort to continue developing of a four-year, generic baccalaureate nursing program has received a $175,000 boost. The support came from Legislative Initiative Funds dedicated for expanding nursing programs and allocated to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, a BSU news release states. BSU's proposal was one of two funded statewide. The grant will allow the university to hire a program director and purchase learning materials needed to meet the requirements of the Board of Nursing approval process.
Students from across Minnesota tested their knowledge of the Ojibwe language, culture and history Wednesday during the annual Cass Lake-Bena Anishinaabe Knowledge Bowl. Sponsored by the Cass Lake-Bena High School Indian Education Program, the all-day competition was held at the American Indian Resource Center on the Bemidji State University campus.
The spotlight shined brightly on Bemidji High School's show choir Vocalmotive this winter as it paved the way to the most successful season in its history. Vocalmotive wrapped up its competitive season Saturday, winning the grand champion title at Totino-Grace High School's "Show Choir Spectacular" in Fridley, Minn. The show choir was also named grand champion Feb. 18 at the "Star Power" competition at Waconia High School in Waconia, Minn. "We've had one other grand champion in our history," said Chris Fettig, Vocalmotive director and BHS choir director.
BAGELY -- An abundance of colorful school projects lined the halls of Bagley Elementary School last week for the school's family fun night, academic fair and book fair. Hundreds of students and their family members gathered at the school Thursday night to eat dinner in the cafeteria, shop at the book fair in the gym and browse the student work brightly decorating the halls. A memorial service will be held Thursday afternoon for a Bemidji State University student who died March 2 in an accidental drowning in Australia. The memorial service for Zach Mellang will be held from 3-4 p.m. in the Beaux Arts Ballroom on the BSU campus. According to a BSU statement, Mellang was student teaching in Lorne, Australia, through the Australia Student Teaching Program, a collaboration between BSU and the University of Minnesota Morris.
TURTLE RIVER -- Country Fest Minnesota '06 is expected to draw thousands of country music fans from across northern Minnesota and beyond to the green, rolling grounds of a local golf course this summer. The spotlight will shine on several big names in country music during the new festival, which will be held June 22-24 10 miles north of Bemidji at the former Castle Highlands Golf Course in Turtle River. Country Fest Minnesota '06 is being presented by Bemidji Entertainment, which is owned by Frank Chrz and his son Justin.
