The Dragon Boat Festival got under way on Friday evening with a parade of teams and a new event "Sprint Races." The races begin at 9 a.m. today. Shown above Team "The Scourge" from Luekens Village Foods had some colorful characters.

Runners in the four day Celebration of Sobriety & Health ran through Bemidji on Wednesday night, shown left, Roxanne Johnson, Floyd Jourdain Jr. Alex Neadeau, Sam Strong and Harvey Roy. The four day fun for sobriety started in Red Lake on Wednesday and will conclude at the Mash-ka-wisen pow wow grounds at Fon du Lac on Saturday.
Nick Giles, 11, of Bemidji, smiles after completing a mini-solo Wednesday at the fifth annual Drumset Camp at the Headwaters School of Music. A total of 24 campers are developing their drumming skills as a group and through private lessons. The camp concludes Friday with a 3 p.m. concert for families and friends.

Bemidji State University President Richard Hanson meets Tuesday with eight middle-school students from China. The students are spending about a month in Bemidji, staying with host families as they learn about American culture.
Eight Dragon Boats arrived early Monday and were unloaded thanks to heavy equipment from Diversified Builders, members of the Bemidji Rotary and Dragon Boat committee members. Practices will be held all week with races Friday night and Saturday for the 2013 Lake Bemidji Dragon Boat Festival.
