Sustainability and information technology are high priorities for Mitch Davidson. As Bemidji State University's chief information officer, he is bringing the two together. Davidson spoke about opportunities in information technology for reducing paper and energy consumption last week at a National Teach-In on Global Warming event at BSU. Davidson, for example, said he wants BSU to install solar panels to offset the power consumed by the SuperLab, the largest computer lab on campus, which would help reduce the campus' carbon footprint. The Minnesota School Psychologists Association has recognized Trish Quistgaard of Bemidji with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Quistgaard, a school psychologist in the Bemidji School District, received the award Jan. 29 at the MSPA's Midwinter Conference in St. Paul. Quistgaard said she felt honored to even be nominated for the award, and is overwhelmed to be recognized by school psychologists around the state. "It made me really glad that I chose the career that I did," Quistgaard said.
Wesley Luggar of Shevlin remembers doing everything by hand - "the hard way" - when he was an area logger. "It's a lot different now," he said. "Now they've got machines to do all the work." Luggar was among many locals and visitors who stopped by the 26th annual Buena Vista Logging Days Saturday at the Buena Vista Logging Village north of Bemidji. "I like to reminisce about the old times logging," said Luggar, who has been attending Logging Days since it started in 1984.
Students at Bemidji State University have a message for the state of Minnesota - freeze tradition and minimize tuition. "It is my belief that affordable public higher education is the key to the future success of our region, our state and our country," said Ryan Schwingler, co-president of the BSU Student Association Student Senate, at a press conference Thursday. The Student Senate, in conjunction with the statewide student associations for both two-year and four-year colleges, hosted a "Freeze Tradition, Minimize Tuition" student and community rally Thursday at BSU.
Two Bemidji area residents received recognition this week for their accomplishments in promoting and advancing girls' and women's sports. The Minnesota Coalition of Women in Athletic Leadership presented awards to 21 athletes and sports leaders Wednesday in the Minnesota State Capitol Rotunda in St. Paul as part of the 23rd annual Minnesota Girls and Women in Sports Day. Ruth Howe of Bemidji received a Special Merit Award.
As the Outback Bowl's halftime show was about to begin, four dancers from Bemidji High School took their places on the field of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. Senior Bobbi Borowski, freshman Sabrina Hockenson, senior Maura McDanel and senior Alicia Takhar performed with about 200 dancers from high schools and middle schools across the nation on New Year's Day in the bowl game's pre-game and halftime shows. Mayibuye Monanabela believes the election of President Barack Obama means a lot. However, he said, he thinks it will take some time to see exactly what it means. "It may mean different things for different populations," said Monanabela, a professor of Africana studies at Tennessee State University in Nashville. Huffing can be deadly - even on the first try. Officer Jon Hunt of the Bemidji Police Department is sharing this message with sixth-graders in his Drug Abuse Resistance Education classes at Bemidji Middle School and St. Philip's School. He is devoting an entire lesson in D.A.R.E. this year to the dangerous behavior. "There's no room for trial and error when it comes to huffing," said Hunt, who is a D.A.R.E. and school resource officer. Hunt said huffing is the intentional inhaling of fumes from solvents, liquids or gases, or any other household chemicals that include some form of poison.
The Bemidji High School varsity high kick and jazz dance teams will travel to Sauk Rapids, Minn., to compete in Saturday's Section 4AA Tournament. The competition will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School. Head coach Krista Grover said she expects the teams to do fairly well, but that the competition will be tough. "Our section's really tight," she said.
The Bemidji School Board has elected board member Carol L. Johnson as its chairperson for 2009. The board voted 5-0 to approve Johnson as the chairperson Monday night. Board member Steven Johnson was absent from the meeting. The board also voted 5-0 to elect board member Gene Dillon as the vice chairperson, board member Bill Faver as the clerk and Chris Leinen, the district's director of business services, as the treasurer.
