The local Kinship North program has a new home. The mentoring program is now part of Evergreen House, a Bemidji nonprofit organization that focuses on strengthening youth and preserving families. Kinship North was previously part of another Bemidji nonprofit organization, Healthy Community Healthy Kids, which dissolved at the end of 2008 because of lack of funding. Kinship North's move to Evergreen House took effect early this month, said Becky Schueller, executive director of Evergreen House. "It was largely possible thanks to a grant from the Northwest Minnesota Foundation," she said. S
When Cecil White Hat was 5 years old, he stood in the back of his dad's car in Mission, S.D. The streets were jam-packed with cars. It was 1953 and the first day it was legal for American Indians to buy alcohol. White Hat described the scene he witnessed as a young boy in his presentation, "How Alcohol Came To The People," Wednesday at the third annual Red Lake Drug and Gang Summit in Red Lake. The two-day summit continues today. White Hat, a Lakota Sioux who is originally from Rosebud, S.D., recalled that day in 1953. "That whole town was packed," he said.
With clinical exam rooms and hospital suites among its features, the new Clinical Resource Center at Bemidji State University is helping nursing students sharpen their skills. The BSU Department of Nursing hosted a donor recognition event Tuesday that included tours of the center. A ribbon-cutting was also held. The Bemidji School Board has approved a memorandum of understanding in which the Bemidji School District would buy more than 30 acres of land adjacent to Bemidji High School. On Monday, the board voted 5-0 to approve the memorandum of understanding with Enbridge Energy, which plans to locate a temporary construction headquarters east of BHS as it works on the construction of two pipelines. Board member Ann Long Voelkner was absent from the vote. Enbridge plans to operate its temporary construction headquarters on 38.17 acres on two parcels of land along U.S.
The Bemidji School Board will consider on Monday night a proposed memorandum of understanding with Enbridge Energy. Enbridge plans to locate a temporary construction headquarters east of Bemidji High School as the company works on the construction of two pipelines. The board will meet at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the BHS Media Center. The meeting is scheduled earlier than usual because a choir concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday at BHS. The proposed memorandum of understanding is among several items on the agenda.
Organizers are getting ready and the ice is nearly set. This weekend on Lake Bemidji, speedskaters and spectators will gather for the U.S. Speedskating National Marathon Championships and the North American Marathon Speedskating Championships. The championships, which will run simultaneously, each will include a 25 kilometer marathon and a 50 K marathon on an oval on Lake Bemidji. The 25 K races will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and the 50 K races will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday. Also, citizens' races will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday on the oval. The races will be half-kilometer, 1 K and 2 K.
Bringing with them the message of ending violence against women, four local teens arrived last week at the State Capitol. The TrekNorth Junior and Senior High School students traveled to St. Paul to participate in the 2009 Action Day to End Violence Against Women. All four students are part of a new group at TrekNorth called Teens Engaged in Ending Violence Overall. School officials and other community leaders from the region met Monday in Bemidji with Sen. Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, to weigh in on Minnesota's budget challenges. Bakk, who chairs the Senate Taxes Committee and is a potential Democratic candidate for governor in 2010, met with community leaders at a luncheon at Sparkling Waters and later held an education funding forum at Bemidji High School. The Boys & Girls Club of the Bemidji Area is planning to open a teen center this year. "We're hoping to have it done sometime by the summer," said Leonore Potter, executive director of the club. The club is renovating the former Bemidji High School football locker rooms in the northeast side of the club building into the teen center. After it's finished, the teen center will be open to high school youth.Plans for the teen center include a lounge area with pool and foosball tables, couches, a snack bar and a portable stage.
When Roland Smith was 5 years old, he wanted a bicycle for Christmas. Instead, he found a typewriter under the Christmas tree. "And I fell in love with this typewriter," he told second- and third-graders Wednesday at Northern Elementary School. Smith, an award-winning author who has written more than 25 fiction and nonfiction books primarily for children and young adults, is speaking this week at schools throughout the Bemidji School District.
