Perham's Jeff Tweeton put a stranglehold on the senior division of the Birchmont Golf Tournament Saturday, winning his third title in four years. Tweeton won his latest title defeating Bemidji's Joe Mayer 4-3 during the 82nd annual Birchmont Golf Tournament at Bemidji Town and Country Club. Unfortunately, it was a day where neither player had their A game going, Tweeton said. "We both played a little rough on the front nine," Tweeton said. "I was fighting my swing all day. My timing was off and I hit some ugly shots.
Just prior to the awards ceremony presenting Gerry Douglas with his trophy, Bemidji Town and Country Club head pro Paul Grovum reached out his hand in congratulations and said, "your going to have to put a new wing on your house (for all the Birchmont trophies)." Douglas, of Bemidji, recorded his fourth straight Birchmont super senior title, topping Bemidji's Dave Vogel 7-6 Saturday at Bemidji Town and Country Club. "Dave played well all week," said Douglas.
Alyssa Williamson used a big six-hole stretch to vault to the 82nd annual Birchmont Golf Tournament women's division title Saturday. With the match even against Jenna Cannon of Plymouth after the fourth hole, Williamson won the next six to take a commanding 6-up lead. Cannon made a bit of charge from there, but it was too little too late as the 2006 Bemidji High grad claimed the crown. A bogey from Cannon put Williamson 1-up after the first hole. A Cannon birdie evened the match after four. But from then on it was all Williamson. The eventual champ parred five to take a 1-up lead.

"This is the first time that I've beaten him. I guess the string is finally over." Kobilka got off to the kind of start every player hopes for in match play.

Jenna Cannon of Plymouth took down defending champion Mary Hasselberg of Staples 1-up, while Bemidji's Alyssa Williamson came through with a hard fought win in 20 holes over Fargo's Ann Arnason. Cannon has been a threat to win the title the past several years, but has never made it to the final previously. The closest she came was in 2003 when she played her sister Cindy in the semifinals and came up short.

Two former champions remain alive in the senior men's field, including defending champion Jeff Tweeton of Perham. Tweeton was a 2-1 winner over Glen Hasselberg of Staples in one of the premier match ups in the division. "It was a good match that went back and forth most of the way," Tweeton said. "Neither of us got too much of a lead on the other." The match was tied going into the ninth hole, Tweeton said.

Blackduck's Joe McKean saw his tournament title dreams continue with a 20 hole win over Nathan Brewinski of Grand Forks. Defending champions had a relatively easy time in the executive and senior men's divisions Wednesday at the 82nd annual Birchmont Golf Tournament. Curt Howard of Sapulpa, Okla., the executive division champion in 1997-98 and 2005, advanced with a 4-3 win over Jeff Hendrickson of Thief River Falls. Howard will now play Doug Johannson of Woodbury, a 2-1 winner over Bemidji's Rob Noren. Bemidji's Bob Kobilka was a 1-up winner in 19 holes over Brad Castle of Pinewood. Kobilka was a winner in a most unconventional way.
