BEMIDJI -- About 40 people chose to start their 2017 outdoors at Lake Bemidji State Park on Sunday. The group slipped their boots into snowshoes and trekked along Rocky Point Trail as part of the “First Day Snowshoe,” hosted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The opening ceremony for the annual Paul Bunyan International Hockey Tournament was hosted at the Sanford Center on Friday morning. Sixteen teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota will take part in the peewee A/AA level tournament that was first held in 1988. Games began Friday and will continue today, taking place at the Bemidji Community Arena, Nymore Arena and Neilson Reise Arena.

Veterans and members of the Northland Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol in Bemidji placed wreaths during the Wreaths Across America event on Friday at the Greenwood Cemetery. Following the ceremony, cadets placed wreaths on specific graves for veterans. The event was orginally scheduled for Dec. 17 but was postponed because of weather.

BEMIDJI—After a successful Thanksgiving, the committee who organizes community holiday meals in Bemidji is now gearing up for Christmas Day. Patrick Plemel, who co-chairs the committee with his wife, Marci Plemel, expects about 650 people to attend the meal set for noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, 1555 Paul Bunyan Drive NW, in Bemidji.

Rinks and warming houses will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and school vacation days. On Monday through Friday, they will be open from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Concessions will also be available at City Park during warming house hours.
BEMIDJI—Paper-thin sheets of ice formed along the shores of Lake Bemidji on Friday afternoon as the temperature dropped to 24 degrees. Still, geese fed off the lake bottom and a beaver splashed in shallow water along the west side of the big lake, which typically freezes over by the end of the first week of December. But not this year. Like last winter, when Lake Bemidji froze over completely on Dec. 19, this year looks to be a later-than-average time for ice-in, according to Lake Bemidji State Park Naturalist John Fylpaa.
