BEMIDJI -- If the Bemidji State soccer team looks like a more cohesive unit when its season begins Friday against Missouri Western State, there's a reason for this: Whitewater rafting. Yes, whitewater rafting. One wouldn't think a rafting excursion would have much to do with soccer but as senior midfielder Alex Pates puts it, the Beavers' recent team trip to Costa Rica was about more than just soccer anyway.
BEMIDJI -- Tom Jenkins of Champlin and James Clark of Plymouth each shot a 1-under 71 to tie for the early lead of the Vandersluis Memorial Golf Tournament's men's championship Saturday at Bemidji Town and Country Club. Full results were not available at presstime. Jenkins, the defending men's champion, has won six men's titles beginning in 2002. He also won in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2012. Zach Israelson of Staples was third at 72 while Jeff Peltier of Bemidji and Steve Young of LaSalle, Manitoba, rounded out the top five with scores of 1-over 73.

The Beavers, who lost quarterback Lance Rongstad to graduation, are still trying to sort out who will be taking snaps when they travel to Winona next Thursday. BEMIDJI -- With one full week of practice complete and a full-pads, full-contact scrimmage under their belts, the Bemidji State football team has a slightly better picture of who will be replacing quarterback Lance Rongstad when the season starts Sept. 5 at Winona State. Emphasize on the word "slightly." "Things are starting to sort themselves out," BSU offensive coordinator Eric Medberry said Thursday. "I told the boys, today was separation day. We hope going into the weekend we can get the two-deep formulated and go from there."
