ST. CLOUD -- St. Cloud Cathedral scored two early goals and Bemidji never recovered, losing 2-1 in girls soccer action Saturday afternoon in St. Cloud. "We started off slow and sluggish and let them get a few early goals," BHS head coach Kelly Schoonover said. "We were playing from behind almost immediately." The Crusaders (4-1) got on the board first with a goal in the 9th minute. Maura Joul scored off a corner kick with an assist from Ellie Engel to go up 1-0. Later in the half, the Crusaders struck again.
ST. LOUIS -- The Bemidji State volleyball team finished the Maryville Tournament Saturday with an overall record of 2-2. The Beavers lost to hosts Maryville 3-1, but rebounded to sweep St. Ambrose 3-0. Against Maryville, BSU won the first game but lost the next three for a final line of 25-27, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22. BSU had jumped out to a quick 8-4 lead in the first set against the Saints and the teams went back-and-forth until BSU pulled out the 27-25 win.
BEMIDJI -- Abagail Nyquist won't easily forget the first-ever soccer game at Chet Anderson Stadium. The sophomore defender scored the very first goal on the newly installed FieldTurf surface, added an assist and helped play lockdown defense to help the Beavers top Missouri Western State with a 2-0 shutout in front of freshman goalkeeper Amanda Garvin Friday night, in the season opener for both teams.
WINONA -- A late surge by the Bemidji State defense helped the BSU offense offset its early struggles at Winona State. Down 27-3 at halftime, the Beavers scored 31 unanswered points -- including an interception and a fumble recovery for touchdowns and a game-winning touchdown in overtime -- to stun Winona State 34-27 in their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener at Verizon Wireless Stadium in Winona.

BEMIDJI -- After a month of competition, the Bemidji State football team finally has a quarterback in Alex Hass. The Beavers, who finished 7-4 last season and won a share of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division title, also have two new linemen, four new wide receivers and a new tight end. If it wasn't evident: Bemidji State's offense will have to get used to the college game quick if it wants to pull off an upset in their season opener at Winona State tonight.
BEMIDJI -- Brian Leonhardt will be playing on the Oakland Raiders practice squad at the start of the new season -- at least for now. The former Bemidji State tight end was released from the Raiders active roster on Aug. 31 -- the final day for teams to make cuts and finalize their active 53-man roster. But the team liked him enough to re-sign him to the seven-man practice squad.
BEMIDJI -- Alex Hass has only started one game in his Bemidji State football career. Given Bemidji State's need for a quarterback following the graduation of Lance Rongstad, that experience, however small, is enough to give Hass the starting job for Thursday's season opener at Winona State. "I want in (to training camp) wanting and expecting to be the starter, so it was a relief to know the hard work paid off and I got it," Hass said Tuesday. "I've been playing here for, this is my fifth year, so I finally get a chance to show what I've got out there."
EAST GRAND FORKS -- The Bemidji High School girls soccer team rallied from a late 1-0 deficit and came back to top East Grand Forks 2-1 Tuesday night. After the Green Wave (4-1) scored early in the second half, the Lumberjacks (2-2) scored in the 62nd minute and the 70th minute and held on for victory. "It was a fantastic game," Bemidji head coach Kellie Schoonover said. "You could feel the intensity of that entire game, especially in the second half. "I can't remember the last time we beat East Grand Forks on their home field, so we're all really excited."
