BEMIDJI -- There's nothing like a mid-October splash in Lake Bemidji. Quite literally, that was the coldest jump that anyone on the Bemidji State football team had experienced. "It was cold," BSU linebacker Connor Quinn said, summing up BSU's annual Homecoming victory tradition. "But it's such a surreal feeling I don't think we could even feel it.
BEMIDJI -- Sarah Stram is thankful the Bemidji State soccer team doesn't have to jump in Lake Bemidji. "It's a little chilly out here for that," Stram said, referring to the BSU football team's annual homecoming tradition of taking a dip in Lake Bemidji following a win."But this is the first year we've been here for homecoming in a while so it's a really big deal." The Beavers didn't do what their football classmates would do later Saturday and take the plunge, but Stram and her teammates still made it a homecoming to remember. Stream scored two goals and Bailey Ertl added two more as the B
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Julia McKinnon netted a hat trick as Ohio State beat Bemidji State 5-1 Friday night, handing the Beavers their first loss of the season. The Beavers (4-1-0, 0-1-1 WCHA) scored first in Friday night's WCHA opener at the OSU Ice Rink, when Summer Thibodeau got a feed from Ciscely Nelson at the 10 minute, 53 second mark of the first period. But after that, it was all Buckeyes, as Kendall Curtis answered three minutes later to tie the game. In the second period McKinnon started the scoring for OSU at 9:25, followed by Curtis' second score at the 11:12 mark to give OSU a 3-1 le
BEMIDJI -- Coming into Friday night, Bemidji State hadn't defeated MSU Moorhead on the volleyball court since 2003 -- 19 straight losses. On top of that, the Beavers were mired in a seven-game losing streak since they beat St. Cloud State Sept. 23 -- almost a month ago. The Beavers ended both of those streaks Friday night, sweeping the Dragons in three games (25-14, 25-23, 25-23) to kick off BSU's Homecoming weekend with a dominating win. "The thing you saw tonight was a higher level of energy, enthusiasm and excitement," BSU head coach Wayne Chadwick said.
BEMIDJI -- Tahi Nomane didn't know what his exact role would be coming into Bemidji State football as a freshman. The Beavers don't typically play true freshmen right away, but they knew they'd be looking for a running back to replace the durable, powerful Avery Walker. "I wasn't sure if I was going to play right away," said Nomane, a Maple Grove graduate.
BEMIDJI -- Last time Bemidji State made the trip to Columbus, Ohio, the Beavers made some national headlines in their series against Ohio State. The Beavers and the Buckeyes participated in a record-setting postgame brawl that resulted in 19 fighting majors and game disqualifications and 302 total penalty minutes. Head coach Jim Scanlan hopes the Beavers don't make those kinds of headlines again -- at least, not for the same reasons. "It's a cliche, but you can throw out all the records," Scanlan said in advance of this weekend's WCHA opener in Columbus.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State women's basketball team will once again have an uphill battle in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. At least, that's what the conference coaches think. The Beavers will have to try and prove them wrong. Conference coaches picked BSU to finish 15th overall in the conference and eighth in the North division, according to a preseason poll released Thursday. The Beavers went 9-18 overall in the 2013-14 season and had a 5-17 conference record -- finishing eighth in the North and 14th overall. This season, head coach Mike Curfman's 10th on the BSU bench, B
BEMIDJI -- Despite the tough loss in their season finale Wednesday night against Moorhead, the Bemidji Lumberjacks are still the class of Section 7-5A. The Lumberjacks, who finished the regular season at 7-1, have earned the No. 1 overall seed in the section playoffs as well as the first-round bye into the section semifinals. Bemidji will host a game Saturday, Oct. 25, at Chet Anderson Stadium and will play either Chisago Lakes or Cambridge-Isanti. Chisago, the No. 4 seed in the section, is 6-2 and will host Cambridge, the No. 5 seed at 4-4, at 7 p.m.
BEMIDJI -- Coming into the season, Tom Serratore knew Bemidji State's early fortunes would hinge where they usually do -- behind the blueline. Especially with an early schedule that features two top-ten non-conference teams and two WCHA contenders. Following BSU's successful opening weekend that included a 5-1 upset of then-No. 2 North Dakota in Grand Forks, Serratore's bench colleagues don't need any more convincing: Bemidji State's defensive corps might be one of the best in the WCHA. "Some of my colleagues have called and asked me about that," Serratore said.
BEMIDJI — Even having the preseason player of the year on the team wasn't enough to convince Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference coaches that the Bemidji State men's basketball team is for real. Instead, head coach Mike Boschee and the Beavers will spend another winter trying to prove their doubters wrong. BSU played in its first official practice of the season Wednesday — the same day the NSIC coaches preseason poll was released. Although senior guard Brock Lutes was tabbed as the NSIC North preseason player of the year, coaches picked BSU to finish 11th overall and fifth i
