BEMIDJI -- The last time the Bemidji State men’s hockey team was playing in a series at home this important this late of the season, the Beavers played in a different arena and a different conference.
BEMIDJI—When Zach Whitecloud was going through his college commitment process, he wasn't aware of the Bemidji area's large Native American population or influence. The 6-foot-3 freshman defensemen did know about the hockey at Bemidji State, though.
BEMIDJI—Although it seems counterintuitive, the Bemidji State football coaching staff is beginning to find that increased success and postseason appearances make recruiting both a little bit easier and a little bit harder. The Beavers, coming off a 9-3 season and a Mineral Water Bowl victory for the first time, set numerous school records this fall and were, for the first time in recent history, were playing in the month of December. It left the BSU coaching staff with a mad scramble to finish their recruiting before Wednesday's National Signing Day.
BEMIDJI—Jim Stone values diversity and versatility when it comes to recruiting soccer players. With this year's recruiting class, Bemidji State's head soccer coach got just that. The Beavers on Wednesday announced the signings of seven players who will join the BSU program for the 2017 season.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji High School boys swimming and diving team had a solid showing in the pool but couldn’t quite unseat Fargo South in their dual meet on Tuesday at BHS. The Bruins edged the Lumberjacks 93-90 in a close matchup at the BHS pool.
ST. PAUL -- After scoring just one goal in two games at the fourth and final North Star College Cup, the Bemidji State men’s hockey team exited the Xcel Energy Center on Saturday afternoon rueing some of their missed chances. The Beavers, who lost to St. Cloud State 2-1 in Friday’s semifinal game despite having an edge in both scoring chances and shots on goal, found goals even harder to come by in Saturday’s consolation game against Minnesota.
ST. PAUL -- The Bemidji State men’s hockey team was never quite out of the game during Friday’s North Star College Cup semifinal against St. Cloud State. The Beavers outshot the Huskies 27-20 and had more than 50 shot attempts in the game. Still, BSU’s offense never quite materialized. The Beavers’ scored just once as the Huskies beat BSU 2-1.
BEMIDJI -- Some might have been surprised to see Carley Esse at center ice preparing to take the third shot in a shootout for the Bemidji State women’s hockey team last Saturday against Minnesota Duluth. Esse, after all, prides herself on defense first and had, until Saturday, never participated in a shootout in a game in her four-year career at BSU. Jim Scanlan knew better than to discount his senior defender.
BEMIDJI -- Despite its short-lived history, the soon-to-be-defunct North Star College Cup still holds plenty of memories for the Bemidji State men’s hockey team.
This weekend's North Star College Cup in St. Paul will be the last. The University of Minnesota confirmed in a brief press release Tuesday something that had been rumored for much of the season: That the tournament, which features four of the five Division I hockey teams in the state of Minnesota on a rotating basis, would not continue past this season.
