BEMIDJI — During Brian Leonhardt’s first-ever regular-season road trip last season with the Oakland Raiders, the second-year tight end was likely the only one of his teammates who elected to stay in his hotel room watching a Division II football game. The Raiders were in town the play the Jets in the first game of the season on Sept. 7. Meanwhile, in Wayne, Neb., the previous day, the Bemidji State football team was playing its own season opener against Wayne State. Leonhardt was fully tuned in to his alma mater’s game. “I was in New York for our first game,” Leonhardt said.

ST. PETER — Bemidji Middle School student Austyn Tobey, a seventh-grader at Bemidji Middle School, has earned a position on the Minnesota state National Junior High rodeo team. Tobey will be travelling with fellow teammates to Des Moines, Iowa, June 21-27 to compete in the National Junior High Finals Rodeo in the barrel racing and ribbon roping competitions. Tobey was reserve champion barrel racer and champion ribbon roper with her partner, Sam Lucas of Jordan, during the 2015 Minnesota Junior High Rodeo state finals recently in St. Peter.
COON RAPIDS — Bemidji High School junior Morgan Williams rallied from her Tuesday score of 88 and ended her Class AAA state tournament with an 82 on the second day of competition at Bunker Hills Golf Course. It was good enough for a two-day score of 170 and vaulted her up to 38th overall. She was 49th after the first day of competition. Williams, who finished tied for 38th place with Morgan Bleyhl of Elk River, shot a 160 at the state meet her sophomore year.
BEMIDJI — Bemidji State’s incoming class of newcomers for the 2015-16 season continues to grow. After announcing the signings of four freshman earlier this offseason, BSU head men’s basketball coach Mike Boschee on Tuesday announced the addition of three transfers to the squad for the upcoming season. Jordan Rhodes, William Harvey and Elijah Valdez will all enroll at the university in the fall. “We are very pleased to add these three players to our BSU basketball family,” Boschee said in a press release.
EDMONTON, Alberta — Former Bemidji State defenseman Brad Hunt has signed another year with the Edmonton Oliers. Hunt, from Ridge Meadow, B.C., appeared in 11 games for the Oilers last season, scoring a goal and three points. However, he spent most of his time with the Oilers’ AHL affiliate in Oklahoma City, where he was named an all-AHL first-team all-star. He led all Oklahoma City defenseman in scoring with 51 points (19 goals, 32 assists) and had just 18 penalty minutes. So when she hits the recruiting trail today, as Bemidji State’s new head women’s basketball coach, she’ll be wearing a neutral black. Her enthusiasm for the new gig, however, should more than make up for her lack of green. “I’m over the moon,” DeVille said in a phone interview Friday, shortly after it was announced she would take over on the Beavers’ bench. “I’m absolutely thrilled for the opportunity.”
