GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- After more than 125 minutes without a goal in two separate games, it was beginning to look like the Bemidji State women’s hockey team would never score again during their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series with North Dakota.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Bemidji State men’s hockey team had No. 1 North Dakota up against the glass -- tied 2-2 going into the third period, the Beavers skated with UND for nearly the entire game.
BEMIDJI — Gerry Fitzgerald had already lost one goal to a review earlier in Friday night’s game against No. 1 North Dakota. Late in the third period of a one-goal game, he didn’t want to lose another. The Bemidji State forward sniped the corner of the net with 5 minutes, 25 seconds to go, netting the game-tying goal and sending the sold-out Sanford Center crowd into a frenzy. But it almost didn’t happen.
BEMIDJI — In many ways, Bemidji State and Minnesota State Moorhead are mirror images of one another — especially this season. The longtime football rivals are usually evenly matched, but this season the teams come into today’s game with identical records for different reasons. The Beavers (3-3, 2-0 NSIC North) lost their first three games by a combined 28 points. Two of those games were last-minute defeats. The Dragons (3-3, 0-2 NSIC North) won their first three games by a combined 28 points.
BEMIDJI -- Maybe a shootout isn’t always the best way to award conference points after a tie game. But after the Bemidji State women’s hockey team and North Dakota exchanged punches on Friday afternoon, with neither able to land a knockout blow, the shootout was just about the only way somebody was going to score.
BEMIDJI — Early in the first period of their game against Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, the Bemidji State men’s hockey team looked lost. UMD dominated and the Beavers didn’t seem to know how to find their way back into the game. That’s where Michael Bitzer came in to lead the way. The sophomore goaltender made 12 saves in the first period to keep it scoreless and eventually helped backstop the Beavers to a 3-2 win in their season opener. “They came out quick right away,” Bitzer said of UMD. “I go every game just to give my team a chance to win, make the saves I can.
BEMIDJI — The Bemidji State women’s hockey team is almost uncomfortably familiar with North Dakota. The Beavers and UND have a long history — they split the series last season, and the teams have met in the WCHA playoffs three times in the past five years. With that in mind, the Beavers don’t think UND is going to throw them any surprises when the teams meet again this weekend in a home-and-home series. The puck drops at 2:07 p.m. today in Bemidji and at the same time Saturday in Grand Forks. “It’s always a battle,” BSU head coach Jim Scanlan said during a press conference on Tuesday.

BEMIDJI — Coming into Monday afternoon’s game in Bemidji, West Ottertail United had given up just two goals all season. The undefeated Storm had been that dominant this year. But...
