The Bemidji State men’s hockey team keeps on moving up in the rankings. After their five-point weekend in Mankato, the Beavers have moved up from No. 15 to No. 13 in the USCHO.com poll. Minnesota State, their opponent in both games, dropped to No. 15 (from 11).
BEMIDJI—The Bemidji State football team added an exclamation point to its regular season on Saturday afternoon. Junior quarterback Jordan Hein set two BSU scoring records as the Beavers dismantled Minnesota Crookston 76-13 at Chet Anderson Stadium, giving them an 8-3 record—their best finish since 2009. Hein threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns on just 10-for-23 passing, and in the process set BSU's total all-time touchdowns record (with 75) and BSU's all-time passing touchdowns record (with 58).
BEMIDJI -- It wouldn’t be a rivalry without familiarity. And both Bemidji State and Minnesota State know one another well. Almost too well. Minnesota State head coach Mike Hastings laughed when reflecting on how familiar he and his coaching staff was with Bemidji State head coach Tom Serratore and his.
BEMIDJI -- Lauren Miller just laughed when asked how weird it would be to play against Stephanie Anderson this weekend. “It’ll be aggressive,” the Bemidji State senior forward said with a smile. “I think it’ll be fun. It’s always fun to play against past teammates. “I’ve been playing with her since I was a freshman so I know how physical she gets.” Miller played on a line with Anderson for three seasons.
BEMIDJI -- Woody Leindecker knows everyone else in Section 8A will be gunning for his Bemidji High School girls swimming and diving team this weekend. “That’s been our theme,” the BHS head coach said. “We have black caps this season with a white ‘X’ on them that we wear in practice. You know after you’ve won five in a row, the ‘X’ is on your back. That’s just human nature.”
BEMIDJI -- It’s not always easy to find the right school when it comes to picking a college, but Alex Vollen picked the school that turned out to fit him perfectly. The Bemidji High School senior will run track for Minnesota State Moorhead next season. Vollen signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday afternoon at BHS.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- It was far from pretty, but in the end even an ugly win still counts toward the Bemidji State men’s hockey team’s perfect league record. The Beavers scored twice on the power play and added a third goal with just more than two minutes to play to beat Alaska, 3-1, at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. The win kept the Beavers (8-2-0) a perfect 8-0-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, keeping them atop the league standings with 24 points.
BEMIDJI—It had all the makings of an instant classic: Two rivals—one in the playoff hunt and another looking to spoil—playing for a trophy. A high-scoring fourth quarter featuring multiple back-and-forth scores. And, finally, a hook-and-ladder play on fourth down which led to a touchdown that would have forced overtime—if not for the extra point attempt dinging off the upright.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Even despite a long road trip, the Bemidji State men’s hockey team continues to find new ways to win in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. On Friday night in Fairbanks, Alaska, the Beavers scored four third-period goals to knock off the Alaska Nanooks, 6-2, and remain perfect in league action.
BEMIDJI -- Going into halftime down 1-0 to St. Cloud State in their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference quarterfinal match, the Bemidji State women’s soccer team still headed to the locker room with confidence. Yes, St. Cloud State had scored a late goal to break what had been a scoreless tie. Monica Majeski knocked in a ball off a corner kick in the 44th minute to make it 1-0 just before the halftime buzzer.
