ROGERS—After upsetting second-seeded Brainerd in their first-round playoff game on Tuesday, the Bemidji High School softball team wasn't able to pull off another upset in their winners' bracket game on Thursday. Instead, one poor third inning spelled doom for BHS in their 9-1 loss to No. 3 seeded Rogers in their Section 8-4A playoff game on Thursday at Rogers High School. The Lumberjacks (8-12) scored in the first inning but the Royals (14-8) scored nine unanswered runs to secure the win.
BEMIDJI—Cold, windy and—eventually—rainy conditions didn't stop the Bemidji High School track and field team's invitational home meet from going on as planned on Monday afternoon at BHS. Both the Lumberjack boys and girls team placed second out of five teams competing in the meet.Moorhead took first in both. The BHS girls scored 145 points, behind Moorhead's 227, while the BHS boys scored 181 points while Moorhead had 206.
BEMIDJI -- Last week, the Bemidji High School softball team was scoring in bunches. The Lumberjacks plated 40 runs in four games against Moorhead and Grand Forks Red River last Tuesday and Thursday, winning all four games. On Monday afternoon against International Falls, the Lumberjacks weren’t able to keep that offensive pace. They scored just one run and fell to the Broncos 4-1 at the BHS softball field.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji High School boys tennis team swept both matches in its triangular on Tuesday afternoon, in the process evening its dual meet record to 7-7 on the season. The Lumberjacks beat Detroit Lakes and East Grand Forks by identical 5-2 scores at the Bemidji High School tennis courts.
BEMIDJI—The weather didn't make things easy on golfers during the Bemidji High School boys' golf invitational Monday afternoon. The wind coming off Lake Bemidji was, at times, too much for everyone at Bemidji Town and Country Club. "The weather was pretty tough today," BHS head coach Seth Knudson said. "The wind was pretty harsh. None of the scores were that great... only four kids broke 80, so it was a tough day to score out there."
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State baseball team tried to extend their 2017 season for as long as they could on Saturday night. In game two of their doubleheader with No. 25 St. Cloud State, the Beavers had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth with a chance to get to extra innings against the Huskies for the second time this week.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State men’s hockey team’s season ended short of its goal of qualifying for the NCAA tournament in 2016-17. The Beavers’ 2017-18 campaign will feature four different teams that got there last season, including some familiar nonconference opponents in Minnesota Duluth, North Dakota and Air Force.
BEMIDJI -- The year before Jessica Yost, Angie Roberts, Alayna Krejci and Courtney O’Connor joined the Bemidji State softball team, the program was coming off yet another poor season. The Beavers finished with just eight wins in 2013 -- just slightly better than its five-win season in 2011 and six victories in 2010.
BEMIDJI -- Former Bemidji State football coach Jeff Tesch will retire this spring. Tesch and the university released a joint statement on Monday afternoon, stating they “have resolved their differences amicably and satisfactorily.” Tesch was removed from his head coaching job just before the 2016 season and put on a leave of absence after reports surfaced that he had used a racial slur during practice.
BEMIDJI -- All weekend, the Bemidji State baseball team found itself right there with Minnesota State Mankato during their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series. The Beavers had played well against the No. 19-ranked Mavericks on Friday, losing 2-1 and 11-6 in a doubleheader.
