MARSHALL — The Bemidji State football team saw a 10-point second-half lead slip away as Southwest Minnesota State scored with 21 seconds to play in regulation to beat the Beavers 34-30 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Saturday night in Marshall. With no timeouts left and down 30-27, SMSU quarterback Blake Gimbel engineered a 5-play, 64-yard drive in less than a minute, capped by a 13-yard pass to Nate Huot to give the Mustangs the lead.
The Bemidji State football team didn’t announce its starting quarterback until just before Saturday night’s season opener — a 35-14 loss to Augustana. Ryan Shields got the start but lasted just one series after he went down with an injury on a fourth down play on BSU’s first drive. Sophomore Jordan Hein took over and performed admirably for the rest of the game despite the loss. “It’s too bad for Ryan,” BSU head coach Jeff Tesch said. “He got hurt real early in the game and they want to do some special MRIs with certain machines that aren’t real accessible here in Bemidji.

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Sarah Stram scored the game’s lone goal and freshman goalkeeper Anna Fobbe earned the first shutout of her collegiate career as the Bemidji State women’s soccer team defeated Northern Michigan 1-0 in a nonconference game on Tuesday afternoon. The teams were scoreless at halftime and remained that way until Stram, a junior, redirected a feed from midfielder Christine Szurek in the 52nd minute of the game to score her second goal of the season. The Beavers (2-0-0) had nine shots, and four on goal. The Wildcats (0-3-0) had 12 shots, and 10 on goal.
