BEMIDJI -- Watching a Bemidji State soccer game from the stands, fans are likely to hear Sonja Barr loud and clear amid the typical chatter on the pitch. The senior goalkeeper is always communicating -- shouting instructions or words of encouragement to her teammates as they need it. "Being vocal during the game keeps me focused, keeps me in link with the game and connected with the team," Barr said. "I'm constantly going in my head, 'If we lose the ball here, where does everybody need be?' You have to position everybody to figure out the what-ifs.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Bemidji State couldn't ruin another top-five team's home opener. The Beavers, who had gone to Grand Forks, N.D., two weeks ago and waltzed out of Ralph Engelstad Arena with a 5-1 rout of No. 2 North Dakota, couldn't duplicate that feat against No. 1 Minnesota. The Gophers scored three times in the third period and defeated the Beavers 5-2 Friday night at Mariucci Arena. "I thought our guys played pretty well," BSU head coach Tom Serratore told Beaver Radio Network following the game.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State women's hockey team scored a late third period goal but couldn't overcome two Wisconsin scores as the No. 2-ranked Badgers topped the Beavers 2-1 Friday night at the Sanford Center. The Beavers (4-3-0, 0-3-0 WCHA) trailed 2-0 in the second period.
BEMIDJI -- When Bemidji State started the season 0-4 against a schedule consisting of NSIC South Division heavyweights, the Beavers know they still had a shot at winning some hardware in the form of an NSIC North Division championship. So far, that trophy is still in play: The Beavers have gone a perfect 3-0 in the North Division after the rough start. But today's game will likely decide weather the Beavers will have a shot at that title at the end of the season.
BEMIDJI -- Sarah Stram scored the only goal as Bemidji State beat WInona State 1-0 Friday night at Chet Anderson Stadium. Stram's goal, the team-leading 11th overall on the season for the sophomore forward, came on a throw-in in the 20th minute of play. The Beavers held on from there, behind Sonja Barr's four-save night in goal and the rest of the BSU defense's shutout performance. BSU outshot Winona 6-4; it was just the second loss of the season for the Warriors, who are now 13-2 overall and 10-2 in the NSIC. BSU, now riding a six-game unbeaten streak, improves to 8-6-1 overall and 7-4-1

A week after upsetting then-No. 2 North Dakota -- and having to wait for a long week of practice at home in Bemidji -- it would, perhaps, be an understatement to say the Bemidji State hockey team is itching to make the four-hour trip to Minneapolis this weekend. The Beavers take on No. 1-ranked Minnesota Friday and Saturday. Even without that number in front of the Gophers' moniker, a BSU-Minnesota series always has special significance.
