BEMIDJI -- The streak had to end someday. The Bemidji State men’s hockey team came into Saturday night’s game at the Sanford Center with a seven-game unbeaten streak against Minnesota Duluth. After a 1-1 tie on Friday night in Duluth, the Beavers even entered the third period Saturday in striking distance -- another low-scoring, 1-1 game meant the Beavers were again in position for a good result against the top-ranked Bulldogs.
DULUTH -- It won’t officially go down in the record books as anything other than a tie, but regardless the No. 15-ranked Bemidji State men’s hockey team felt pretty good after Friday night’s 1-1 tie with top-ranked Minnesota Duluth. Although freshman defender Zach Whitecloud’s goal in the 3-on-3 overtime period didn’t count in the scorebook, the Beavers left Duluth’s Amsoil Arena on Friday with plenty of confidence after tying the No. 1 team in the country.
BEMIDJI -- The Blue Ox Trophy usually occupies a more out-of-the-way place in Bemidji State’s locker room. Not this week. “It’s been right by the logo in the center of the room all week,” BSU senior forward Nate Arentz said.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji High School boys swimming and diving team looked consistent in its season-opening meet. The small Lumberjacks team took first place in all 12 events and had...
BEMIDJI -- Before this weekend, patrons at the Sanford Center had never seen 3-on-3 overtime. They’d never seen a shootout, either -- at least, not in a men’s game. The Bemidji State men and Lake Superior State gave fans their first taste of both on Friday night. The Beavers and the Lakers played to a 1-1 tie in their series opener -- a game that needed 70 minutes of hockey plus a five more (give-or-take) of a sudden-death penalty shootout to decide a winner.
BEMIDJI -- Jay Dickman’s celebration after scoring his second-period power-play goal on Saturday was a little more animated than usual. Bemidji State’s sophomore forward had just put the Beavers up 3-1 on Lake Superior State after finishing a wraparound goal past LSSU’s Gordon Defiel. It had been a tumultuous period, with eight combined penalties and plenty of testiness between the two teams.
ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Freshman Abby Halluska a goal and two assists and sophomore Lisa Laiti added three more helpers as the Bemidji State women's hockey team beat Rochester Institute of Technology, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon. The victory earned the Beavers the nonconference road sweep and sent them into the holiday break with an 8-11-1 overall record. Senior goaltender Brittini Mowat made 23 saves for BSU.
BEMIDJI -- The Sanford Center’s first-ever penalty shootout wasn’t exactly the ending the Bemidji State men’s hockey team had envisioned following Friday night’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association game against Lake Superior State. Still, the Beavers will take any extra points they can get. After skating to a 1-1 tie with the Lakers after 60 minutes the Beavers needed not one, not two, but three extra sessions of hockey to take two of three points from LSSU.
Coming into her freshman season at Bemidji State, Kiki Radke hadn’t played much on the wing. At Hastings High School, she was mostly a center for the school’s hockey team. But luckily for Radke, versatility is one of her biggest strengths. The former four-sport standout played defense on the school’s soccer team in addition to running track and cross country.
BEMIDJI -- If the Bemidji State men’s hockey team wants to continue its assault on the rest of its opponents in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, the Beavers are going to need to find some offense, too. Especially this weekend, with the high-scoring Lake Superior State Lakers in town for a two-game conference series this weekend at the Sanford Center (7:07 p.m. today and Saturday).
