The best moments in my time covering Bemidji-area sports never happened during the games. Of course, being able to watch the actual sporting events as part of the job was always fun, but I always considered it more of a nice perk than anything. Really, the best parts of this job always happened before the games, or afterward in the locker room, the media room or on the bus while the team was waiting to depart.
BEMIDJI -- It took a late comeback, but the Bemidji Blue Ox amateur baseball team has advanced to the next round of the Region 10C tournament. The top-seeded Blue Ox (19-6) defeated the Ada Athletics 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at BSU’s Security Insurance Field. Bemidji took an early lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. Zach Braun singled and scored while Collin Rutledge reached on an error and scored, putting Bemidji up 2-0.
BEMIDJI -- When the Bemidji Blue Ox amateur baseball team try and defend their Region 10C tournament title this weekend, they’ll be doing it with a significant advantage -- they’re doing so on their home field. The Ox, which won the region last season to qualify for the state Class C tournament, are hosting for the first time since 2014 at BSU’s Security Insurance Field.
BEMIDJI -- Near-perfect weather greeted golfers for the 93rd edition of the Birchmont Golf Tournament on Monday morning at Bemidji Town & Country Club. Consistently cool temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s greeted golfers for their qualifying rounds first thing Monday morning, and although the wind picked up and made things trickier for those with afternoon tee times, players couldn’t have asked for much better conditions.
BEMIDJI -- Even nine years removed from graduating from Bemidji State, Tyler Scofield always makes time on his calendar for the Galen Nagle Memorial Golf Tournament. The BSU men’s hockey team’s annual golf outing, which always takes place in late July at Bemidji Town and Country Club, attracts hockey alums and fans alike.
BEMIDJI -- For the first time in its 20-year history, the Galen Nagle Memorial Golf Tournament will feature a very special guest: The MacNaughton Cup. The Bemidji State men’s hockey team won the trophy last season, when they went wire-to-wire in first place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
BEMIDJI -- After nearly a year of uncertainty, the Bemidji State football program finally found some stability on its sidelines. Brent Bolte was officially announced as BSU’s 16th head football coach on Monday. Bolte coached the entirety of the 2016 football season as the Beavers’ interim coach after former head coach Jeff Tesch was unexpectedly removed from the BSU sidelines two days before the team’s season opener.
MOORHEAD -- The Bemidji Post 14 Junior Legion baseball team beat Moorhead 6-5 in game one but lost 9-8 in game two of their road doubleheader on Friday night. In the opener, Bemidji’s Reid Colley scored a run in the top of the second, but Moorhead answered three runs in the bottom of the second and another in the bottom of the third, making it 4-1.
LAKEVILLE -- The Bemidji American Legion Post 14 baseball team started off the Gopher Classic baseball tournament Friday with a split against two Twin Cities-area teams. The Centaurs fell to Farmington 3-1 in the opener but beat Lakeville North 9-4 in the second game. In game one, Farmington shot out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first and one in the second.
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji Post 14 Junior Legion baseball team got another sweep on Thursday, as the Woodpeckers swept Detroit Lakes at the BSU baseball diamond. The Woodpeckers beat the Lakers 14-4 in game one and 6-2 in game two to improve to 17-5 on the season. In the opener, starting pitcher Jon Melhus ran into some trouble in the top of the first inning. He gave up three runs on two hits and a walk, which gave the Lakers a 3-0 lead.
