BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State women’s tennis team was nearly perfect in their match Saturday afternoon against Minnesota Morris. The Beavers swept the Cougars 9-0 in their nonconference match at BSU’s Gillett Wellness Center. Aside from No. 2 Zoe Lindgren, who beat UMM’s Brittney Ferrian 6-0, 6-1, the Beavers didn’t drop a game the entire meet.
BEMIDJI -- The prevailing wisdom going into this weekend’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff quarterfinal series was that Bemidji State and Northern Michigan would be in for a goaltending battle between Michael Bitzer and Atte Tolvanen. Bitzer is the WCHA’s goaltending champion while Tolvanen made headlines last month when he backstopped the Wildcats to five consecutive shutouts, nearly breaking the national record.
BEMIDJI -- Michael Bitzer prepares the same for every series. It keeps him consistent. After all, why mess with something you know is working? Bitzer, Bemidji State’s junior goaltender, officially won the Western Collegiate Hockey Association goaltending title, finishing the regular season with a 1.40 goals against average and a .940 save percentage in 27 league games.
The Bemidji State men’s hockey team plays a first-round playoff series starting tomorrow against Northern Michigan. If you want to watch, you’ll have two options. You can come to the Sanford Center and see it in person — tickets start at $20 — or you can watch it online. A WCHA.tv package will cost you $44.99 for the entire playoffs.
BEMIDJI—The win-loss record doesn't necessarily reflect how Bemidji State head women's hockey coach Jim Scanlan saw how his team played this season—especially down the stretch.
The three-time defending Section 8A boys basketball champions will again be an overwhelming favorite to defend their title. Red Lake again earned the top seed for this year's Section 8A East Tournament, as the Warriors finished with a 21-4 record and went a perfect 10-0 against section foes. Their only four losses came against Nevis (twice) as well as defending Class A state champion Minneapolis North and Class 4A school Robbinsdale Cooper.
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- The Bemidji High School girls basketball team hadn’t won a section playoff game since 2011. It had been even longer since they’d won a game in Thief River Falls (2009, to be exact). On Tuesday night, the Lumberjacks snapped both of those streaks. The sixth-seeded Jacks upset the third-seeded Prowlers 71-54 in Section 8-3A action.
BEMIDJI -- Bemidji State and Minnesota State’s final meeting of the regular season Saturday repeated a familiar scoreline. The Beavers won the previous three games by 2-1 scores (one in overtime, one in 3-on-3 overtime and a third in regulation). During Saturday’s game at the Sanford Center it was Minnesota State’s turn.
BEMIDJI -- Minnesota State’s potent offensive attack was once again no match for the Bemidji State men’s hockey team. BSU junior goaltender Michael Bitzer stopped 26 of 27 shots and Gerry Fitzgerald scored the game-winning goal on a third-period power play as the Beavers beat the Mavericks 2-1 on Friday night at the Sanford Center. It was BSU’s 20th victory of the season, and powered them to their first 20-win campaign since going 23-10-4 in 2009-10.
BEMIDJI -- Just because they clinched the MacNaughton Cup a full two weeks before the end of the regular season doesn’t mean the Bemidji State men’s hockey team won’t be giving it their all this weekend.
