BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State women’s hockey team added two more newcomers to the roster for the upcoming 2017-18 season. BSU head coach Jim Scanlan announced both Kara Werth and Abby Ecker will join the incoming freshman class, giving the Beavers nine first-year players. Werth, a defenseman from Moorhead, was originally committed to play at the University of North Dakota before the Fighting Hawks dropped their program earlier this spring.
BEMIDJI—A number of current and future Bemidji State men's hockey players will participate in NHL Prospect Development camps this summer. Both goaltender Michael Bitzer, a rising senior who was an All-American and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's player of the year in 2016-17, and defenseman Zach Whitecloud, who was an All-WCHA selection as a freshman, will head to California to break camp with the Los Angeles Kings. Meanwhile, incoming freshman Brendan Harris gets to stay in his hometown to compete in camp with the expansion Vegas Golden Knights.
SUNRIVER, Ore.—After a rough first round Sunday at the PGA Professional Championship, Mitchell Mackedanz of Bemidji rebounded with a strong second round Monday and made the cut for the third round. On Sunday Mackedanz, playing at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore., shot a 76, which was four-over-par. During Monday's round on a par-71 course, he improved his game by five strokes and shot a 71—right at par. He bogeyed five times Sunday, as opposed to just three times Monday. And during the second round Mackedanz birdied three times compared to only on on Sunday.
BEMIDJI—It's been about two weeks since most of the members of the Bemidji American Legion Post 14 baseball team ended their high school seasons and played meaningful games. On Monday afternoon, the Centaurs looked more like a team clicking at midseason than one that was just beginning their summer. Post 14 swept Detroit Lakes Post 15 in a doubleheader at Security Insurance field at Bemidji State. The Centaurs won 4-0 and 7-4.
BEMIDJI -- Mitchell Mackedanz has played in plenty of big tournaments during his golf career, but when he heads to Oregon this Sunday, June 18, to play in the 2017 PGA Professional Championship, it will be like nothing he’s ever experienced.
ST. PAUL—On a hot, windy day in St. Paul, everything came together perfectly for the Bemidji High School 4x800 relay team during the Minnesota Class AA Track and Field championships. The Lumberjacks ran what BHS head coach Steve Sneide ran a "perfect" race Saturday, which culminated in a state championship. The BHS squad, which consists of seniors Cody Roder, Isaac Berg and Alex Vollen and junior Linaes Whiting, clocked in at 7 minutes, 52.90 seconds, besting second-place Wayzata by just 0.37 seconds.
With the 2018 Olympics less than a year away, rosters for the various teams are starting to form. And it looks like one former Beaver will have a chance at making the team in her adopted country.
BEMIDJI -- The University of North Dakota announced it was cutting its women’s hockey program back in March. That put Bemidji State and the rest of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in a bind -- they were losing a conference member and four games were gone from their schedule.
BAGLEY—As soon as the bus finally pulled into its destination at Timberwoods Events Center in Bagley Tuesday afternoon, the passengers—mostly University of Minnesota head coaches and athletic department staff—started chanting John Carlson's name.
MOORHEAD—The Bemidji High School boys track team will send six athletes to the Section 8AA finals on Saturday, June 3, while the BHS girls team will send two more, following their showing in the 8AA preliminaries which were held Wednesday in Moorhead.
