A Duluth man accused of passing fake $20 bills at a Kool-Aid stand in Lake Nebagamon and a rummage sale in Superior was bound over for arraignment in Douglas County Circuit Court last week. Steven Alan Wakefield, 46, faces two felony charges of uttering a forgery. According to the criminal complaint:
A Bayfield County sheriff's deputy who was rescued after his vehicle was swept away by floodwaters two weeks ago has returned to duty. The sheriff's office reported Monday that Deputy David Dawson was back on the job. As previously reported in the News Tribune, Dawson was driving near Grand View in southern Bayfield County on the night of July 11 when his vehicle was swept off a road by the raging waters of a normally small creek, after 8 to 10 inches of rain fell in the region.
DARWIN, Minn. -- The Meeker County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a woman was pinned between a dump truck and a forklift at a business Monday night. Michele Fjelstad, 53, of Litchfield, was transported to the Meeker Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment of injuries, believed to be non life-threatening. The incident happened at 4:30 p.m. Monday, on the 300 block of W. U.S. Highway 12 in Darwin.
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Gov. Mark Dayton announced Tuesday the appointment of Sharon Benson of St. Cloud as the new district court judge in Minnesota’s Seventh Judicial District. Benson is replacing the Judge Mark Hansen and will be chambered at Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County.
SPICER, Minn. -- A man was robbed outside Zorbaz on Green Lake in Spicer Monday night by two men on long skateboards who claimed to be armed. The incident was reported to the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office at 10:45 p.m. Monday. According to the report, two people slammed a man into a car. They claimed to be carrying a gun, and took the man's money.
BACKUS, Minn. -- A 39-year-old Merrifield man was killed Sunday in a personal watercraft crash on Ponto Lake near Backus about 40 miles north of Brainerd.. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call at 2:25 p.m. and the operator of the jet ski, Jonathan Joseph Kub, 39, Merrifield, was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff’s office reported Kub was wearing a life jacket when he fell off the jet ski. An autopsy is scheduled with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office.
A 52-year-old Chisholm man was killed when the semi he was driving rear-ended another semi on U.S. Highway 53 Monday afternoon, the Minnesota State Patrol reported. Both semis were traveling north at the time of the crash, which occurred at around 4 p.m. just south of Canyon. The driver of the second semi, a 39-year-old man from St. Joseph, Minn., was not injured, the State Patrol said. Authorities have not released the name of the victim or any other details about the crash.
DETROIT LAKES - A Becker County deputy was injured while responding to a crash on Highway 10 early this morning. The deputy, who has not been identified, was assisting Minnesota State Patrol east of Detroit Lakes with a vehicle that was in a ditch. According to the Becker County Sheriff's Office, the deputy had not gotten out of his vehicle when it was struck by a SUV, also driving on Highway 10. The deputy reported a minor injury. The driver of the SUV, 56-year-old Steven Gabbard of Detroit Lakes, was not injured.
ST. PAUL – Minnesota has now reached 200 road fatalities in 2016, about the same as last year. Preliminary numbers from the Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety show that Minnesota reached the 200 mark on July 23. Last year at this time, the state reported 201 fatalities on July 20. Drunk driving, lack of seat belt use, distractions and speed continue to contribute to a majority of fatalities on Minnesota roads, and each one of those behaviors can be avoided.
CLOQUET, Minn. -- A man is in custody after a shooting in Cloquet left two people injured Sunday. The shooting occurred at around 2:30 p.m. in the area of Brevator Road and Big Lake Road, a news release from the Cloquet Police Department said. According to WDIO-TV, Cloquet Police Chief Steve Stracek said the victims and suspects were in two separate vehicles and that all parties are known to each other.
