ST. PAUL – Minnesota organizations may apply for a share of $35 million in grants to expand high-speed Internet around the state, mostly in rural areas. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development Friday announced it will begin taking applications on July 22. Legislators approved the broadband money earlier this year. State grants, up to $5 million each, will be available to pay for up to half of the costs to build more broadband distribution systems in unserved and underserved areas.
COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. — A Cottage Grove woman was bound by suspects who forced their way into her home, ransacked the house and then fled, police said. The 54-year-old woman answered a door about 8:30 a.m. Friday and three male suspects forced their way in, Cottage Grove Police Chief Craig Woolery said. They tied her up and ransacked the house at 8010 Hemingway Ave. “It appears they were looking for something specific,” Woolery said.
PERHAM, Minn. -- A child reported missing near Perham at about 1 p.m. Friday, was found safe in a cornfield near the intersection of Highway 108 and County Highway 49, with the assistance of a helicopter, after a one-hour search. The child had been with his father while he was working in the field, according to an Otter Tail County Sheriff’s report.

HENNING — A 74-year-old Clitherall man died in a motorcycle crash Tuesday, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office. Jon Greenwood was riding his 2015 Yamaha FZ motorcycle southbound on Otter Tail County Road 65 south of Henning Tuesday afternoon. As he entered a left curve near Lost School Road, he drifted off the right side of the road. The motorcycle overturned and Greenwood was thrown off the vehicle.

FARGO – With a bloody shirt linking a man to the homicide of a Fargo woman, prosecutors have charged him with sexually assaulting and murdering her in May. The charges were filed Thursday, June 30, in Cass County District Court against 22-year-old Landon Lauwagie in connection with the death of 40-year-old Cory Terlecky.
ST. PAUL -- Traffic deaths in 2015 rose by 14 percent in the past year, state Department of Public Safety officials said Thursday. Fatalities reached 411 last year, according to a department press release, up from 361 in 2014. Seventy-four of those deaths were affected by distracted driving, the top contributing factor in lethal crashes.
HIBBING, Minn. -- A sexual assault allegation led to the beheading of a 20-year-old Hibbing man last week in rural Itasca County, according to murder charges filed Wednesday. Authorities said David Alexander Haiman also was beaten with a baseball bat and stabbed with a machete after being lured to a wooded area in the Ball Club community by the boyfriend of the alleged sexual assault victim. The suspect, 35-year-old Joseph Christen Thoresen of Grand Rapids, was arraigned Wednesday in State District Court on an intentional second-degree murder charge.
