DULUTH, Minn. -- A teenager from southern Minnesota who was struck by a falling tree while camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on Sunday night remained in critical condition Tuesday at a Duluth hospital. Jacob Walz, 14, of Rochester, was at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he was first airlifted following the Sunday night incident on Duncan Lake, about 3 miles northeast of Trail Center and just south of the Canadian border, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office reported.
CROOKSTON -- A Crookston man pleaded guilty Tuesday in Polk County District Court to criminal vehicular homicide in connection with a motorcycle crash that killed his wife in September. Corey Lee Reitmeier, 44, operating a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle with his wife, Wendy Reitmeier, 43, as a passenger when the motorcycle struck a deer Sept. 26 on Polk County Road 57 near Gentilly. Neither was wearing a helmet, and Reitmeier had a blood alcohol level at 0.18 near the time of the crash, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08.

LAKE PARK, Minn. -- Ginnie Donovan of Lake Park was in the midst of a prayer service for her daughter Monday night when she got the call from the Minnesota State Patrol. Two Hastings residents had been arrested in the hit and run crash that killed 10-year-old Caylin Donovan of Lake Park about 10 days ago on a highway on the shores of Lake Mille Lacs.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- A fisherman’s body was pulled Lake Andrew two miles south of Alexandria on Monday night. At 8:22 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a report of an empty boat floating on Lake Andrew. Deputies and the dive team responded, as well as LifeLink helicopter and the Forada First Responders. Deputies learned the owner of the boat left to go fishing at about 3:30 p.m., but did not return as scheduled at 5:30 p.m.
One person died and two were injured in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 2 in Itasca County on Monday. The Minnesota State Patrol reported that Russell Locken, 57, died when the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta he was driving east near Warba, southeast of Grand Rapids, drifted into the westbound lanes and sideswiped a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado at about 1:30 p.m. The Patrol did not provide a hometown for Locken.
ST. PAUL PARK, Minn. -- Marilyn Krenik cannot fathom why someone would steal a memorial bench from her husband’s gravesite. The Mother’s Day present was a tribute to her late husband, who died April 18. The bench was discovered missing within days after her last visit to the gravesite June 4. “I figured if someone needed it that bad, they're in pretty bad shape,” Krenik said.
ERSKINE -- The Friends of Rydell and Glacial Ridge Refuges Association will host the showing of a conservation-related film on June 28 and July 12 at the Rydell National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, 17788 349th Street SE in Erskine. The films will begin at 6:30 p.m. each evening and will last approximately one hour.

Severe storms rumbled through northern Minnesota on Sunday night, leaving one person dead. Cook County authorities are in the process of recovering the body of a male who was killed as storms moved through Sunday evening on Duncan Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness just south of the Canadian border.
