DULUTH, Minn. -- The Norwegian viking ship that’s taking its Great Lakes tour of tall ships festivals one stop at a time as it closely monitors an ability to fund its trip left Bay City, Mich., on Wednesday bound for Chicago. The Draken Harald Hårfagre (or Fairhair) is scheduled to be in Duluth for the tall ships festival on Aug. 18-21.
MOORHEAD – A woman here was stabbed during an altercation late Tuesday night, July 19, and was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening. Police have not detained a suspect and believe there is no threat to the public, said police Sgt. Clinton Stephenson. Police declined to identify the woman Wednesday, July 20, and could not provide more details on her condition. Around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers were called to an apartment building at 1605 20th St. S. in Moorhead, where they found the woman injured.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn.— The 12-year-old girl who fell off an inner tube and was hit by a passing boat on Clitherall lake Sunday, July 17, has been identified by the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office. Faith Hodge, of Fargo was being pulled on the tube by a boat around 1:30 p.m. Sunday when she fell off and was struck by a boat driven by David Thorson, 62, of Fargo. Hodge was taken to Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls to be treated for her injuries. Her condition Wednesday, July 20, was not available.
ST. PAUL -- A Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officer has been awarded a lifesaving award as he and other emergency responders in central Minnesota saved a man from drowning after he went through the ice with his ATV on Platte Lake and was stranded on an island of ice. James Pattock, 69, of Foley was still in the water in the March 13 incident when conservation officer Paul Kuske of Pierz notified the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office he was responding to the incident near Pierz about 30 miles south of Brainerd..
The brother of a woman suspected of being an accomplice in the beheading of an Iron Range man has been charged with witness tampering. Joeseph Allen Greniger, 20, of Grand Rapids was charged Tuesday in State District Court in Grand Rapids with one count of felony first-degree tampering with a witness. The charge stems from alleged multiple attempts made by Greniger to threaten a witness, saying the witness “snitched” on his sister.
PILLAGER, Minn. -- It has been confirmed. A second alligator in the Brainerd lakes area has been found. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday received a report of a possible alligator sighting in Hardy Lake in rural Pillager -- about 14 miles west of Brainerd. Officers responded to the area and did in fact locate a small alligator in the lake near the shoreline. The alligator was secured and transported to the Safari North Wildlife Park, just south of Brainerd.
DULUTH, Minn. -- David Andrew Smithson has pleaded guilty to felony criminal vehicular homicide, agreeing with toxicology reports that he had amphetamine, methamphetamine, THC and morphine in his system when the the van he was driving struck and killed Brian Respler, who was walking along Grand Avenue in West Duluth. Smithson, 27, said Monday he had been sleeping at his brother's house in Piedmont before driving to his parents’ house in Gary-New Duluth, and dozed off at the wheel after earlier doing drugs.
ST. PAUL -- Wildlife artists can submit entries for the 2017 Minnesota Trout and Salmon Stamp from Monday, Aug. 1, until 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12. The trout and salmon stamp validation is sold for $10 along with fishing licenses, and for an extra 75 cents, purchasers can receive the pictorial stamp. It is also sold as a collectible for $10.75. Revenue from stamp sales is dedicated to trout and salmon management and habitat work.
DULUTH, Minn. -- A 3-year-old boy found unresponsive in a septic tank on Sunday night in Duluth Township has died. Mick Johnston of Two Harbors, Minn., died late Monday night at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reported. The exact cause of death was not yet known, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday, but it is believed to be from complications related to the incident.
HERMANTOWN, Minn. -- A vehicle evading authorities hit 117 mph through Hermantown in northeast Minnesota before crashing into a cement and rock outcropping and starting on fire early Tuesday. Police officers extinguished the flames and pulled four men out of the vehicle just after 2 am. The men were taken to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center with various injuries, a Hermantown Police Department news release said.
