A suspect was identified and the investigation continues involving an assault with a hatchet Saturday near the Oak Point area of Leech Lake in rural Cass Lake. Cass County Sheriff Tom Burch Tuesday said investigators made contact with the suspect, the victim, a 52-year-old Cass Lake man and witnesses of the incident. Burch said the suspect has not been arrested and formal charges may be pending with the Cass County Attorney's Office.
MOORHEAD — A child was reportedly hit by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 17, in or near the construction area on Eighth Street South near Interstate 94, according to information broadcast to area law enforcement and first responders. The Red River Dispatch Center confirmed a child was reported hit by a vehicle about 4:31 p.m. and was at a home at 2507 Brookdale Road.
A man described by authorities as a “substantial supplier of heroin to the Twin Ports area” faces up to 30 years in prison after being arrested on drug charges last week in Duluth. Torrance Elion, 45, who authorities said has an address listed in Detroit but also a residence in Duluth, was charged Tuesday in State District Court in Duluth with one count of felony first degree sale of 10 or more grams of heroin. If convicted, in addition to prison time, Elion faces up to $1 million in fines.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The person responsible for setting several downtown Grand Forks fires that police called suspicious over the weekend could face arson charges, police said Wednesday. No arrests have been made, but Lt. Brett Johnson said police are working on a couple of leads.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minneapolis animal-control officers caught and euthanized a fox Wednesday morning believed to be the one that bit a woman near Lake Harriet a day earlier, police said. The fox “was showing symptoms associated with rabies,” police said, and will be tested for the disease They cautioned there’s no way to be sure they got the right fox. The woman, who sustained minor injuries from the bite, will be vaccinated.
MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- The Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man that was killed early last Friday morning near Mahnomen. Sheriff Doug Krier said foul play is suspected in the death of Jon Rock, 43, of Minneapolis who died from an apparent stab wound to his upper leg in a house south of Mahnomen.. Krier said Rock bled to death. Deputies were called to the scene about 5:25 am. Friday morning after receiving a 911 call. Rock was dead when the law officers arrived.
MINOT, N.D. -- Nine motorcycles have been reported stolen in Minot since July 1, prompting Minot police to urge residents to securely lock up their possessions. Police Investigations Capt. John Klug said the thefts have been taking place at all times of the day and night. He also said some have been stolen without the keys in them. “It appears the suspect or suspects are moving the motorcycles from the immediate area then loading them onto a trailer or removing them by other means,” Klug said.
Duluth police are advising that people planning to attend the Tall Ships Duluth festival later this week prepare for significant traffic congestion in Canal Park and the Bayfront area. The festival grounds will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, with the Parade of Sail — when all the tall ships will enter the harbor under the Aerial Lift Bridge — tentatively scheduled to start at about 1 p.m. and last about 90 minutes.
Two Level 3 predatory sex offenders will be moving to new locations in Crow Wing County. Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl reported Brandon Keith Churchill, 32, will move from a Brainerd address to a residence in the area of Crow Wing County Road 3 and Birchem Circle in Merrifield. Churchill has lived at this residence in the past, so there will be no community notification meeting.
CUSHING—A 28-year-old man was injured Saturday in a tubing crash on Lake Alexander in Cushing. The Morrison County Sheriff's Office reported Cole Johnson of Eden Prairie was riding in a tube being pulled behind a boat driven by friends when he fell off the tube and hit his head on the water. Johnson was knocked unconscious for a short period of time. Johnson was wearing a floatation device at the time of the accident. Johnson was transported to a hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance with unknown injuries.
