Wild rice has been used as a food source for centuries, and it's grown in more than half of Minnesota's counties. Clearly, it's a big deal. In this week's Northland Outdoors TV episode, we visit a central Minnesota family which has made a living on harvesting wild rice for four generations. TROY, Wis. -- A Wisconsin girl killed in a crash last week swerved off the road to avoid being struck by another motorist on her cellphone, according to new information released Monday by St. Croix County authorities. The victim, identified by the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office as 16-year-old Kyra F. Hayes of Beldenville, died Friday in a crash on Highway 35 in Troy. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the sheriff’s office news release.

A Brainerd woman reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, triggering a crash that caused her vehicle to become airborne in Aitkin County early Sunday morning. Inez Hart, 66, suffered what authorities described as minor injuries when her Chevrolet Impala, driven south on U.S. Highway 169, entered a ditch and hit an access point, sending it into the air for about 100 feet, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. She was brought to Riverwood Hospital.
RAYMOND, Minn. -- The last light of the day was fading when Daniel Kiecker of Lake Lillian came to the rescue of a 9-year-old girl lost for about two hours Saturday in a corn field north of Raymond. “And then when she saw me the look on her face was priceless,’’ said Kiecker Sunday while recounting how he discovered the missing girl near the town about 100 miles west of Minneapolis.
A Brainerd man suffered serious injury to his hand after another man allegedly broke into his home and assaulted him Thursday night. Brodie Damon Barrows, 23, was charged Friday in Crow Wing County District Court with two felonies as a result of the incident. According to a criminal complaint filed by the county attorney’s office, the Brainerd Police Department responded shortly after 6 p.m. to a residence on the 900 block of South Eighth Street.
Marshall County, Minn. - One person was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Marshall County. The Minnesota State Patrol reports that David Knutson, 24, of Warren was traveling eastbound on Highway 1 Thursday around 7 a.m. His vehicle reportedly crossed the center line and struck the front drivers side of a westbound Peterbuilt semi. Knutson was killed in the crash. The driver of the semi, Mark Aune, 46, of Thief River Falls was not injured.
A judge on Thursday granted an extension for the filing of criminal charges in the fatal shooting of a Duluth man earlier this week. Two suspects were taken into custody Tuesday morning in connection with the shooting death of 47-year-old Eric Wayne Burns on the 2000 block of West Superior Street. Orin Bernard Vann, 53, and Aaron Demetrius Humphreys, 42, are being held at the St. Louis County Jail on preliminary charges of intentional second-degree murder.

Mark Dayton is requesting a presidential disaster declaration for widespread damage caused Sept. 21-22 in southern Minnesota In a letter to President Barack Obama, Dayton the state is providing more than $10 million in state-funded disaster relief to county, city, township, and tribal governments in response to nine major storms this summer.
LAKE SYLVIA, Minn. -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is trying an aggressive new treatment in a Wright County lake to try to stop the spread of the invasive algae starry stonewort. The new diver-assisted suction harvest is a manual control method combining hand pulling with machine suction to physically remove starry stonewort while sparing native vegetation, followed by application of a selective herbicide.
