BEMIDJI—The largest, brightest full moon in nearly seven decades is now on display, promising Earth-bound sky-watchers a celestial "supermoon" spectacle. The full moon will come nearer to Earth than at any time since 1948, astronomers said. At closest approach, which occurred at 5:23 a.m. on Monday, the moon will pass within 216,486 miles of Earth's surface, about 22,000 miles closer than average. The moon's distance from Earth varies because it is in an egg-shaped, not circular, orbit around the planet.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. - A farm accident claimed the life of a Douglas County man Friday, Nov. 11. Ewald Wussow, 62, of Alexandria, was killed when he was run over by a combine driven by his brother, Donovan Wussow, 63, of Garfield, according to a news release from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Donovan Wussow called 911 at 8:17 p.m. to report the accident, saying did not know his brother was in the cornfield near the combine while he was backing up the combine.
COSMOS, Minn. -- A 49-year-old man died at the scene of a one-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon, Nov. 10, in Greenleaf Township. The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office says Craig Lehmbecker, of Minnetonka, died in a rollover crash near the intersection of 190th Street and 573rd Avenue, northeast of Cosmos. Lehmbecker had been driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado west on 190th Street when he lost control, and the vehicle rolled.
EDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- A machinery fire at an Eden Valley business Thursday afternoon, Nov. 10, sparked an explosion, injuring three men. Duane Stang, 46, of St. Cloud, James Thielen, 57, of Richmond, and Scott Thielen, 39, of Eden Valley were injured in the explosion at Schlangen’s Custom Cabinets, the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office says.
ELLENDALE, Minn. -- A train derailment forced the evacuation of Ellendale early Friday morning, Nov. 11., as well as the closure of Highway 30 near the city, located just south of Owatonna. KAAL-TV reported the train was carrying propane. Residents were able to begin returning to their homes around midday, the station reported. Officials are working to clean up the area and the city was evacuated as a precaution, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said in a news release.
ST. PAUL — A regulatory crackdown across Minnesota uncovered an illegal sports betting pool in Austin and two other alcohol-related fines in Marshall. The state’s Department of Public Safety said that its Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division and the Gambling Control Board conducted three months of compliance checks at 110 businesses in 12 cities, according to a news release Thursday, Nov. 10.
Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen is asking the public to come forward with information that may assist with their investigation into the death of a hunter. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday determined that Terrence Brisk, 41, died of blood loss due to a gunshot wound. Investigators believe Brisk was shot between 2:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Nov. 7 on wooded property northwest of the intersection of Hawthorne Road and Jewel Road in Belle Prairie Township, east of Little Falls.
OMAHA - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers renewed its call Wednesday, Nov. 9, for Dakota Access Pipeline to voluntarily stop construction near Lake Oahe, citing concerns for people involved with continued protests north of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.
A Cloquet man who was found dead in his deer stand from a gunshot wound has been identified. Carlton County Sheriff Kelly Lake identified the man as 73-year-old Leland Gene Carlson.
