DULUTH -- A Grand Rapids man accused of sexually assaulting his young nieces two decades ago pleaded guilty Tuesday, Aug. 14, in State District Court in Itasca County.
MOORHEAD, Minn. – A 25-year-old man is accused of stealing items from the campus of Minnesota State University Moorhead when he was reportedly a student there. Jeremy Lafromboise is charged with receiving stolen property and second-degree burglary of a government or school building, both felonies.
THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. — A Thief River Falls man was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 8, for stabbing a coworker in the neck, according to court records. Louis Damian Cruz Montanez, 26, was charged with attempted murder and assault with a weapon. If convicted, he could spend up to 20 years in prison and pay a $20,000 fine. Police were called Wednesday to Northern Pride, 419 Pennington Ave. S. in Thief River Falls. An affidavit for Cruz Montanez's arrest said he got into a fight with another man in the locker room. The man allegedly swung a box fan at Cruz Montanez.
BRANDON, Minn. -- A six-vehicle crash on Interstate 94 near Alexandria in western Minnesota in a construction zone Monday, Aug. 14, sent three people to the hospital. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the extent of injuries is unknown but it is believed that none of the injuries were serious. A State Patrol spokesman did not know how many passengers were involved.
ZUMBROTA, Minn. -- A 4-year-old child was fatally injured in southeast Minnesota Monday morning, according to Zumbrota Police Chief Patrick J. Callahan. The child was playing on a swing set when it collapsed on top of the child, Callahan reported. The Zumbrota Police Department, the Zumbrota Area ambulance Service and North Air Care all responded to the scene in the city of Zumbrota. Lifesaving efforts were not successful.
BISMARCK — Attorneys for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said this week the agency will need more time to review information from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the developer of the Dakota Access Pipeline before completing an environmental study. In a status report filed in the U.S. District Court in North Dakota, the Corps said it has "almost completed its evaluation" but now expects to issue a decision by the end of the month. It had previously expected to complete the process by Friday, Aug. 10.
ST. PAUL—Two groups filed court documents Wednesday arguing the state's environmental review of Enbridge Energy's Line 3 oil pipeline was insufficient. Honor the Earth and Friends of the Headwaters claim the environmental impact statement, or EIS, failed to look at potential oil spills at specific locations or the results of a tribal cultural survey. In June, the five-member Minnesota Public Utilities Commission unanimously granted the 340-mile long pipeline across Minnesota a certificate of need, but deemed the EIS "adequate" in March.
CARLTON, Minn. An 84-year-old Alexandria woman was killed in a crash on Interstate 35 in northeast Minnesota on Sunday, Aug. 5. The Minnesota State Patrol reports that Darlene Ann Lewis-Lucas was attempting to make a U-turn from southbound I-35 using the interstate's median crossover and was struck by a truck traveling southbound on I-35 about 3:12 p.m. Sunday in Carlton County.
MOUNTAIN LAKE, Minn. — Two Wednesday, Aug. 1, traffic stops in Cottonwood County resulted in the confiscation of nearly 60 pounds of marijuana, more than $13,000 and six arrests. According to criminal complaints, two vehicles bearing California license plates were stopped after 1 a.m.
ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the invasive algae starry stonewort in Medicine Lake, located in Plymouth in the Twin Cities. This is the first new confirmation of starry stonewort in Minnesota in 2018. There are now 12 lakes in Minnesota where starry stonewort has been confirmed, the DNR said in a news release.
