ALBANY, Minn. – A rural Albany man and his three young sons escaped their burning home late Saturday night. All four suffered smoke inhalation. According to the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was reported shortly before midnight in Albany Township.
BELGRADE, Minn. – A 16-year-old Belgrade boy was killed in a one-vehicle crash Saturday morning. According to the Stearns County Sheriff’s Department, Austin Young was driving a 1997 Chevy truck south on Stearns County Road 197, about two miles south of Belgrade, when his vehicle went off the road on a curve and hit a tree.
PAYNESVILLE, Minn. – A pilot was seriously injured when his small, experimental plane crashed Saturday afternoon in a field near the Paynesville Airport. According to the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Michael Jude, 71, of St. Cloud was flying from the Clear Lake Airport to the Paynesville Airport when the engine of his fixed-wing single engine plane began to overheat.
DULUTH, Minn. -- Five suspects are in custody in connection with the Feb. 14 shooting death of University of Minnesota Duluth student William Grahek, Duluth police announced Friday afternoon. Deandre Demetrius Davenport, 21, Noah Duane Baker, 19, Noah Anthony Charles King, 18, Tara Rai Baker, 22, and Xavier Alfred Haywood, 26, are all being held in the St. Louis County Jail.
FARGO — A Fargo man who was unscathed after a double-fatal collision on a South Dakota highway in 2009 was killed over the weekend in a motorcycle crash while headed to the Daytona 500 NASCAR race. Nicholas James Helgeson, 29, had a passion for motorcycles, and taking the trip to Daytona was "a dream come true," his obituary said. He was riding with his stepfather from Cape Coral, Fla., to Daytona on Saturday, Feb. 25, when the crashed happened. On a two-lane highway, an oncoming driver veered into Helgeson's lane and struck him head-on, his obituary said.
GRAND FORKS -- Poison and Tesla plan to rock the northern Red River Valley this spring. The two bands, both popular in the 1980s, will play May 27 at the Alerus Center as part of the XXX tour, according to a news release. The tour will be the first time all four original members of Poison will perform together in five years.

ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Department of Transportation should delay requiring permits to mow hay along state highways, state senators decided Thursday, March 2, They voted 47-20 to force the department to wait a year to enforce its plan to make farmers obtain a permit before cutting grass in ditches. Instead, the bill requires the department to work with farmers to find a more acceptable way to regulate mowing. "Some do not understand the permits," bill sponsor Sen. Gary Dahms, R-Redwood Falls, said about farmers.
WILLMAR, Minn. -- There are now 265,728 valid permit-holders for handguns in Minnesota, an increase of 59 percent over 2105, according to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension report on Wednesday, March 1, said 71,156 permits were issued statewide in 2016, the highest number of permits issued in a single year since the current firearm laws were implemented in 2003. That’s up from 44,696 in 2015.
WILLMAR, Minn. – Police say a 38-year-old Cosmos man hit his estranged wife with his vehicle as she left her Willmar workplace Wednesday morning, abducted her and drove away from the area. The woman was found safe, but injured. The man is now in custody at the Kandiyohi County Jail in connection with the incident, facing kidnapping, second-degree assault, domestic assault and interfering with a 911 call charges.
