MOORHEAD — Moorhead police are investigating whether criminal charges are appropriate after a driver of a car hit a child waiting to get on a school bus Wednesday morning. The child was approaching the bus in the area of the 1100 block of 19th Street North at about 7:34 a.m. Wednesday when the driver of a slow-moving car failed to spot the child and struck the 8-year-old, Sgt. Toby Krone said. The child wasn't seriously injured in the crash, Krone said. It's not clear yet whether the driver of the car could face charges, he said.
ST. PAUL – Traffic deaths increased rather dramatically last year compared to 2014, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Preliminary numbers from the department showed 396 people died on Minnesota roads last year compared with 361 for 2014. After all reports are received, the department is estimating 405 road fatalities -- the highest since 411 people lost their lives in 2010.

WORTHINGTON — A Worthington nurse who worked for the Avera Clinic in this southwestern Minnesota city pleaded guilty Tuesday to obtaining a prescription pad while he worked there and writing prescriptions. As part of the plea agreement, Paul David Dittmer pleaded guilty to six charges in Nobles County District Court. Three of the charges were aggravated forgery, and three were for fifth-degree possession of Percocet and Hydrocodone. Under oath, Dittmer confessed that he signed the name of the physician’s assistant he worked for on the pad and had the prescriptions filled.

BLOOMINGTON — Eleven Minnesota highway projects, ranging from a short stretch of road to a new dairy farm to a major new interchange, will share in $32 million of grants. CROOKSTON, Minn. -- Police in Crookston have identified and interviewed, but have not arrested, people believed to have been involved in a Christmas Day assault at a Crookston bar that killed an East Grand Forks man. John Henry Torres, 36, died Friday at Altru Hospital from a head injury. An autopsy has been performed. However, preliminary results are not yet available, according to a news release from the Crookston Police Department.
MOORHEAD, Minn. – Officials of Globe University have announced plans to close its Moorhead campus at the end of next year or early in 2017. The college, formerly known here as the Minnesota School of Business, announced in an email to students and staff Tuesday that the college would no longer enroll new students and that the campus would close once current students have had the opportunity to complete their programs.

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. -- For the second time in 10 years, a Detroit Lakes woman has been found guilty of embezzlement. Late last month, Stephanie Jo Disse, 45, was sentenced for stealing about $143,000 from her employer in Becker County district court. She was sentenced on one felony count of theft or diversion of corporate property. Six other felony counts were dismissed in a plea agreement.
