ST. PAUL -- Minnesota’s Commission on Judicial Selection has forwarded the names of three finalists to Gov. Mark Dayton fill the vacancy in the state’s Eighth Judicial District in western Minnesota. The three are Assistant Cass County (N.D.) Attorney Cherie Clark, Morris lawyer Amy Doll and Stevens County Attorney Aaron Jordan.
WORTHINGTON, Minn. -- Brandon Limlee Thavixay of Worthington has denied charges he used 52 counterfeit $20 bills to purchase a 55-inch, $1,071 television from a local retailer. He appeared in court Wednesday to be arraigned on two felony charges, counterfeiting of currency and theft by swindle, following the alleged incident in January.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Thursday announced a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a person or persons involved in killing three wolves near Floodwood last month. Federal wardens said they are investigating the case with Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers, but need the public's help.
CUSHING, Minn. -- A 45-year-old Cushing man was arrested Monday following a more than two hour search in wooded and swampy terrain followed by a 15 minute stand-off with deputies when he refused to come down from a tree he had climbed, Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen has reported.
WAUBUN, Minn. -- Authorities are searching for a vehicle that struck a man who had left his car after it slid off of a road and into a ditch in Mahnomen County on Sunday. According to Minnesota State Patrol, Mohamed Paya, 28, Fargo, was driving a 1994 Cadillac DeVille eastbound on Minnesota Highway 113, just east of Waubun about 6:30 p.m. when the vehicle hit an icy patch and slid into the northbound ditch.
MINNEAPOLIS -- A Twin Cities union representing 4,000 janitors is preparing to go on strike Wednesday. A Sunday deadline for a new contract passed, prompting the Service Employees International Union Local 26 to announce members will walk off the job on Wednesday. A rally is being planned at 7:30 that evening at U.S. Bank Plaza in Minneapolis.
ELKO, Minn. -- A child was killed and two others hurt, one seriously, in an SUV rollover on icy Interstate 35 north of Elko Sunday night. The Minnesota State Patrol said the 2002 GMC Yukon, traveling north, lost control and rolled into the ditch about 8:15 p.m. One child, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. All of the people identified are from St. Paul.
CROOKSTON—A Fosston woman has been ordered serve to three months in jail in connection with an August drug bust near a school. Julia Gloria Holm, 26, pleaded guilty Jan. 30 in Polk County District Court to fifth-degree possession of drugs, a felony. She was sentenced Thursday to 90 days in Tri County Community Corrections with five years of supervised probation. In August, four individuals, Holm included, were charged with drug crimes after Polk County deputies found more than $350 worth of meth during a bust.
FARGO — Investigating an armed standoff Wednesday night that left a Fargo police officer with a gunshot wound expected to be fatal could take a month, authorities say. Officer Jason Moszer, 33, a six-year veteran with the Police Department, was shot by a suspect near the start of an eight-hour standoff with police at a north Fargo residence Wednesday night and early Thursday, just blocks from the Police Department.
TOWER, Minn. -- A 53-year-old Hastings man was killed Wednesday when the snowmobile he was driving left the trail and struck a tree near Tower in northeast Minnesota. Steven Rahman was traveling with four others on the Taconite Snowmobile Trail about 15 miles southwest of Tower and failed to negotiate a curve in the trail, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
