ST. PAUL -- Fines will increase Aug. 1 in Minnesota for drivers who fail to stop for a school bus with activated lights and the crossing arm fully extended. The fine will jump to $500 from $300. In the past six years, law enforcement across the state wrote nearly 9,000 stop arm violation citations, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety said. During the annual School Bus Stop Arm Survey earlier this year, 3,659 bus drivers across the state reported 703 stop arm violations in just one day.
A 33-year-old Pequot Lakes man is accused of choking and assaulting a female victim and threatening to kill himself with a gun. Aaron William Sheffield had his first appearance Friday in Crow Wing County District Court in Brainerd where he was charged with two felonies of domestic assault by strangulation and endangering a child in a situation that could cause harm or death; gross misdemeanor of interrupting an emergency call; and three misdemeanor domestic assault counts.
LITCHFIELD, Minn. – A Grove City, Minn., man has pleaded guilty to one felony charge connected to an incident in which he choked a man, hit him with a beer bottle and threatened people with an ax. KC Matthew Cline, 26, of Grove City, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Meeker County District Court in Litchfield. He was originally charged with five felonies and pleaded guilty to second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. The other four charges were dismissed in a plea agreement.
ST. PAUL—Minnesota's unadjusted job count passed the 3 million mark in June for the first time ever, according to figures released last week by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. The agency said the state added 4,400 jobs in June on a seasonally adjusted basis and has gained 77,478 jobs over the past year, the biggest over-the-year job gain since May 1998. Job growth in Minnesota is up 2.6 percent over the past year, compared with a national job growth rate of 1.5 percent.
MOORHEAD—The Moorhead Budweiser plant had to be evacuated and shut down during a police chase Sunday, July 23. Authorities say around 6:45 p.m. they were called to a neighborhood a few blocks away from the plant, at 2101 26th St. S, for a burglary report where a man was trying to get into a home. Officers in the area responded right away and chased the man into the Budweiser plant where he ran, scaled a fence and jumped onto a roof.
DULUTH — Duluth Mayor Emily Larson had been on the job for just over six months when the storm hit. On July 21, 2016, she was on vacation with her family, camping in Michigan, when she received word of the storm that brought 100 mph wind gusts to parts of the city and caused widespread devastation across the region. Thousands of Northland residents lost power for days. Larson said it took no more than a 45-second meeting for her family to agree that the trip should be cut short.
WILLMAR, Minn. - A 48-year-old woman will serve about six years in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee for an assault that left a woman at an addiction recovery center in Willmar with permanent brain damage. Stacie Lee Johnson, of Hibbing, Minn., was sentenced in district court in Kandiyohi County on Monday to prison for a first degree assault conviction.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- An Alexandria woman who died Saturday after falling from the back of a slow-moving pickup near Lake Andrew has been identified as 61-year-old Marilyn Weedman, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s office. Her husband, Kevin Weedman, was driving the pickup, Sheriff Troy Wolberson said. Alcohol was not a factor and no charges are expected. The sheriff's office received a call at 3:36 p.m. Saturday, July 15, reporting a woman had fallen from a pickup truck south of Alexandria. The woman had a head injury and the caller stated that CPR was in progress.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn.—A 27-year-old man is in custody following a 2½-hour standoff with police during which he barricaded himself in his home and threatened another resident with a gun. Police were called to the home, on the 700 block of North Vine Street, about 3:45 p.m. Saturday, July 15. Officers tried to persuade Theodore Tiede to surrender. During negotiations, Tiede fired several gunshots from the home.
WILLMAR, Minn. – A Cosmos man charged with hitting his estranged wife with a car and kidnapping her has pleaded guilty in Kandiyohi County District Court in central Minnesota. Cesar Octavia Garcia-Gonzalez, 38, is to be sentenced Sept. 25 on a felony charge of kidnapping to commit great bodily harm or terrorize. In a plea agreement, seven other charges against him will be dismissed.
