THIEF RIVER FALLS--A Thief River Falls man is facing three felonies after police said he tried to set his son, a tractor and a dirt bike on fire. Michael Roy Nelson, 45, was charged Monday in Pennington County District Court with two felony counts of second-degree attempted arson, a felony second-degree assault charge and a misdemeanor count of domestic assault.
BAXTER, Minn. -- A postal worker is behind bars Wednesday after allegedly making terroristic threats at the Baxter Post Office Annex and for having a grenade with him while he was on his mail route. Baxter Police Chief Jim Exsted said police were informed shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday of a male worker who made "some type of" terroristic threat at the Baxter Postal Annex that morning. Police investigated and learned there was a significant threat.
BIWABIK, Minn. -- One person was killed and another seriously injured after the vehicle they were in left the road and rolled several times along Minnesota Highway 135 near Biwabik on Tuesday. Diana Olson, 48, of Embarrass, was killed in the rollover, the Minnesota State Patrol reported Wednesday. A passenger in the vehicle, 46-year-old Gregory Olson of Hibbing, was transported to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. The hospital reported Gregory Olson to be in serious condition.
OLIVIA, Minn -- An online connection fostered on the socialization app "Meet Me" turned sinister when a Bird Island man blackmailed the woman he had met through the app, claiming to have taken video of their physical encounter.
Five people were arrested Monday following a drugs and weapons sweep at three different locations in the village of Naytahwaush, which is in Mahnomen County on the White Earth Indian Reservation. According to a press release from the Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Department, officers recovered weapons, narcotics and money during the search, and several young children were taken and turned over to Indian Child Welfare for protective custody.
ST. PAUL -- Dr. Beth S. Thompson is Minnesota's new state veterinarian. She replaces Dr. Bill Hartmann, who earlier announced his retirement for June 1. He has led the State Board of Animal Health and been state veterinarian since 2001. He has worked for the board since 1988. Thompson joined the board as a senior veterinarian in 2008 after graduating from the University of Minnesota Veterinary School in 2007 and spending a year as a swine production system veterinarian for a Minnesota company.
ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota House agriculture finance chairman wants to move nearly $2 million out of a fund set up to fight bird flu last year. Chairman Rod Hamilton, R-Mountain Lake, offered a plan under consideration so the money could be used for other agriculture disasters. "Right away, we would be able to access additional dollars if there was an agriculture disaster," Hamilton said Tuesday.
A Ponsford man has been found guilty of raping a 16 year old girl in the basement of his mother’s house. After a four day jury trial, Joseph Lee Bellanger, 40, was found guilty of two felony counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
FARGO—A 28-year-old Fargo woman who was charged last fall with gross sexual imposition after she was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old boy was sentenced Monday, April 11, to 167 days in jail after earlier pleading guilty to a lesser charge of soliciting a minor to have sex. Chelsea J. Leonard was given credit for having already served 167 days and was ordered to pay fees totalling more than $500.
BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Lake of the Woods Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a man who was found floating on the Rainy River on Monday. Lake of the Woods Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at 11:26 a.m. Monday of a body floating on the Rainy River about one mile east of Baudette, Minn., according to a press release. John Martin Stiglich, 52, of Shoreview, Minn., was recovered from the river at 11:53 a.m.
