HIBBING, Minn. -- A Grand Rapids man charged with randomly stabbing a Hibbing man to death last week will undergo a mental health evaluation. Sixth Judicial District Judge David Ackerson ordered the evaluation at a hearing Thursday for 32-year-old suspect Benjamin David Lundquist. Lundquist is charged with intentional second-degree murder in the slaying of Joel Dean Gangness, who was found dead inside his Hibbing apartment with more than a dozen stab wounds and other injuries on Jan. 17.
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Mayor Del Rae Williams was discharged from Sanford Medical Center on Thursday, Jan. 26 after a weeklong stay due to an infection and complications with her kidneys.

ST. PAUL -- One person died in a Wednesday morning fire, Jan. 25, at a duplex on St. Paul’s East Side and three more suffered severe burns. The three injured — an adult and two children — were taken to Regions hospital. One of children’s injuries are so extensive he might not survive, said St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — Two Detroit Lakes group home employees are facing serious sexual assault charges in separate incidents. In the first case, Varfee Kamara, 30, of 2602 18th St. S., Fargo, has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony counts of first- and third-degree criminal sexual conduct — victim mentally impaired.
SAGINAW, Minn. -- A 13-year-old Saginaw boy critically injured in a recent ATV crash has died. Logan Rautio passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, said his father, Scott Rautio. The ATV crash north of Duluth occurred on Jan. 16. Logan Rautio had remained in critical condition in a Duluth hospital throughout the week after he had been airlifted to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth following the crash in Fredenberg Township.
Two men are in jail and a 28-year-old victim remained in a Duluth hospital Sunday after a Saturday night shooting downtown, the Duluth Police Department said in a news release. Police responded to the area of First Avenue East and First Street at 8:43 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 on a report of a shooting. They arrived to find the victim having been shot in the abdomen; his condition was unknown by police, who declined to release his name to the News Tribune.
ROLLA, N.D. — A man is dead after authorities say he was shot after trying to break into a home near Rolla. The Rolette County Sheriff’s Office says it happened at about 3 a.m. Sunday morning. Six people, including children, were inside the home 2 miles outside of Rolla when they heard someone trying break in. The intruder was then shot and killed. Authorities say the intruder had a weapon, but it's unknown who fired the deadly shot.
CLOQUET, Minn. — Carlton County authorities identified Emma Loven on Sunday as the victim in a fatal two-vehicle crash last week on an icy county highway near Cloquet. The 11-year-old Esko, Minn., girl died at the scene Friday morning on Carlton County Highway 3, also known as Carlton Road, near the intersection with Minnesota Highway 45.
