BACKUS—Cass County commissioners Tuesday approved reorganizing health and human services. The agency started as a separate health department and a separate human services department. After the two were combined under a single director, they have continued to operate under separate supervisors.
HIBBING, Minn. -- Two Hibbing police officers and the allegedly armed man they shot and wounded last week have been identified by authorities. Che Nathaniel Jones, 24, of Rochester remains hospitalized at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth after he was shot during an incident that began at 12:45 p.m. Friday in Hibbing, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension stated on Tuesday night.

CROOKSTON, Minn. — A Crookston woman will spend up to three years in jail for keeping heroin she intended to sell in her bra. Cynthia Esquivel, 45, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Grand Forks District Court to possessing a controlled substance with intent to deliver or manufacture, a Class A felony that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. After agreeing to a plea deal, she was sentenced to six years imprisonment with three years suspended. She also was ordered to pay $1,000 in fines.
COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. — The husband of a Cottage Grove woman found dead in her home two months ago has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her. Police on Tuesday arrested Stephen Carl Allwine, 43, and booked him at the Washington County jail on probable cause second-degree murder in connection with 43-year-old Amy Louise Allwine’s death.
A Duluth teen remained in critical condition in a Duluth hospital Tuesday, the day after an all-terrain vehicle crash north of the city. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday identified the teen as 13-year-old Logan Howard Rautio. Rautio was airlifted Monday to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth following the crash in Fredenberg Township.
RICE LAKE, Wis. -- A Rice Lake, Wis., man died after apparently following through on his threat to set off an explosion in his apartment late Sunday, authorities said. About 14 other residents of the apartment complex were evacuated by police before the explosion. The building was a complete loss after the explosion and fire, the Rice Lake Police Department reported.
WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson, the ranking member on the U.S. House agriculture committee has announced the 20 Democratic members that will serve on the committee this year. Three are from Minnesota, including Peterson. Among the main duties will be reauthorizing the 2014 Farm Bill, said Peterson who represents most of western Minnesota.
FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. -- Visitors to this year’s Great Minnesota Get-Together will see major grounds upgrades. That’s the good news. The bad news: Ticket prices are going up $1. The Minnesota State Fair’s board of managers on Sunday approved $8 million for upgrades, including $4.6 million in capital work and $3.4 million in maintenance projects, according to a news release.
ROUND LAKE TOWNSHIP, MINN.—A 12-year-old Fargo boy was injured in a snowmobile accident here on Saturday, Jan. 14. According to a release from the Becker County Sheriff's Office, the accident happened around 2:18 p.m. The boy was driving a snowmobile near Ice Cracking Lake when his snowmobile left the trail and hit a tree. The boy's father was with him at the time of the accident, driving a separate snowmobile.
