SPICER, Minn. – Trifecta Deals, who sells hoverboards across the country, is being sued by Kris and Joel Paffrath of Spicer. The couple believe the company sold them a defective hoverboard in May 2016, which was the cause of a fire at their Spicer home in July 2016. The fire killed the family’s four dogs, injured Kris Paffrath and caused over $50,000 in damages to the home.
DALTON, Minn. — The Red River Valley Regional Bomb Squad is disposing of about 25 sticks of dynamite Friday, Dec. 30, found at a rural residence along the Otter Tail and Grant county line, an Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office spokesman said. The dynamite was discovered about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, in a shed near the home in the 28,000 Block of 100th Street, Lt. Keith Van Dyke said.
MANDAN — Five Dakota Access Pipeline protesters were arrested Tuesday, Dec. 27, during a day that included a SWAT team responded to trespassing reports near the pipeline route. In a news release, the Morton County Sheriff's Office said protesters gathered several times on the Backwater Bridge on Tuesday afternoon. Eventually, some protesters tampered with barricades before crossing the bridge, which previously pipeline opponents agreed to stay off.
GRAND FORKS — Child pornography charges against a former UND aviation professor have been transferred from state to federal court. Eric Hewitt Basile, 37, was charged with eight Class C felony counts of possession of certain materials prohibited in Grand Forks District Court on Sept. 8 after a UND administration request for a computer search revealed multiple images of children between 1 and 3 years old being sexually assaulted.
PERHAM -- Four people were injured in two separate rollovers, one in Otter Tail County and one in Becker County, on Tuesday, Dec. 27. The first rollover happened about 4:06 p.m. on Highway 10 west of Perham, according to the Minnesota State Patrol, which responded to both crashes.
LAKE PARK, Minn.—A snowmobile driver and 9-year-old passenger were injured in a crash on Tuesday, Dec. 27 while riding north of Lake Park. Emergency crews and the Becker County Sheriff's Office responded about noon to a call about a snowmobile crash on 230th Street in Hamden Township, according to a news release. The driver of the snowmobile, 39-year-old Lanna Lappi, of Rochester, Minn., and the passenger were taken by ambulance to a Fargo hospital with non-critical injuries.
RUSH RIVER, Wis. - St. Croix County authorities allege a Roberts woman and her husband embezzled about $190,000 from a rural church here over the course of nearly 10 years. Kara K. Amundson-LaVenture and Michael LaVenture return to court next week on felony theft charges. LaVenture’s charges stipulate he was party to a crime. Amundson-LaVenture also faces one count of unauthorized identity use, a felony. A preliminary hearing in both cases is set for Tuesday, Jan. 3.
CLOQUET, Minn. -- Court documents released Tuesday revealed the name of the victim in Friday’s shooting in Cloquet. John F. Korby, 36, of Cloquet, died from multiple gunshots, including one to his head. The incident was reported just before 9 a.m. Friday on the Fond du Lac Reservation, according to Cloquet police. Korby was taken to a Duluth hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
LANESBORO, Minn. -- A third deer infected with chronic wasting disease has been discovered in southeastern Minnesota, according to the Department of Natural Resources. A hunter harvested the deer in mid-November about 5 miles north of the two previously reported infected deer, which were killed about 4 miles west of Lanesboro. An area taxidermist later provided a sample for testing to the DNR.
JORDAN, Minn. – A 53-year-old New London man was killed in a car crash south of Jordan on Monday, Dec. 26. The name of the individual has not been released by the Minnesota State Patrol.
