MINNEAPOLIS -- Protesters in both Minneapolis and St. Paul on Friday, Jan. 27, met on the Lake Street-Marshall Bridge to rally against President Donald Trump’s orders earlier this week to advance the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipelines. Around 4 p.m., the Minneapolis Police Department said in a Twitter post that Lake Street was closed, showing a photo of protesters gathered across all four lanes of the bridge.
Authorities are investigating a shooting that left a 17-year-old male injured on Thursday in Duluth’s East Hillside neighborhood. Duluth police released few details about the incident Thursday, but said investigators “believe that the victim and suspect were known to each other and this was not a random shooting.” Authorities said they do not believe there is an ongoing public safety concern related to the incident.
TWO HARBORS, Minn. -- A Hibbing commercial truck driver who has a history of traffic collisions brought on by a medical condition will go to trial on a criminal vehicular homicide charge in Lake County, where authorities said he caused an October 2015 crash that killed a Silver Bay man. John Ray Carpenter, 60, is accused of operating a vehicle in a “grossly negligent manner” after allegedly falling asleep or losing consciousness at the wheel of his septic tanker, causing a crash that killed 31-year-old Andrew Johnson.
HIBBING, Minn. -- A Grand Rapids man charged with randomly stabbing a Hibbing man to death last week will undergo a mental health evaluation. Sixth Judicial District Judge David Ackerson ordered the evaluation at a hearing Thursday for 32-year-old suspect Benjamin David Lundquist. Lundquist is charged with intentional second-degree murder in the slaying of Joel Dean Gangness, who was found dead inside his Hibbing apartment with more than a dozen stab wounds and other injuries on Jan. 17.

ST. PAUL -- One person died in a Wednesday morning fire, Jan. 25, at a duplex on St. Paul’s East Side and three more suffered severe burns. The three injured — an adult and two children — were taken to Regions hospital. One of children’s injuries are so extensive he might not survive, said St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — Two Detroit Lakes group home employees are facing serious sexual assault charges in separate incidents. In the first case, Varfee Kamara, 30, of 2602 18th St. S., Fargo, has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony counts of first- and third-degree criminal sexual conduct — victim mentally impaired.
SAGINAW, Minn. -- A 13-year-old Saginaw boy critically injured in a recent ATV crash has died. Logan Rautio passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, said his father, Scott Rautio. The ATV crash north of Duluth occurred on Jan. 16. Logan Rautio had remained in critical condition in a Duluth hospital throughout the week after he had been airlifted to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth following the crash in Fredenberg Township.
