TULABY LAKE, Minn. - A 55-year-old Moorhead man may face charges in an incident on a northwestern Minnesota lake where it was thought a man used a pontoon to harass a deer and stop it from getting to shore -- thus killing the animal. Steven William Timm has been identified as the driver of the pontoon, which belonged to a friend who lived on Tulaby Lake about 40 miles northwest of Detroit Lakes in Mahnomen County.
EMILY, Minn. -- A shotgun blast grazed the side of an 18-year-old Shakopee man's head Sunday morning while duck hunting in Crow Wing County, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reported. When the DNR and the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office arrived, several first responders were working on the man identified as Derek A. Bonsante. Bonsante was talking and interacting normally and it appeared he had a grazing head wound from a shotgun blast.
ST. PAUL -- Forty-four Republican Minnesota House members signed a letter Tuesday asking state Attorney General Lori Swanson and Gov. Mark Dayton to challenge the federal Clean Power Plan that would cut utility carbon emissions by more than 40 percent in 2030. The GOP lawmakers say that the federal Environmental Protection Agency plan greatly exceeds the government's authority. Other states already are challenging the EPA plan.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. -- A 17-month-old child was pronounced dead Monday afternoon after being hit by a car in Fergus Falls. Fergus Falls police say Avah Mae Dirkman was struck about 12:30 p.m. by a 2009 Dodge Journey driven by Katie Diane Black, 29, of Fergus Falls. Reports from witnesses said Black had just picked up her child from a residence in the 300 block of 14th Street. A woman approached Black’s car to say speak with her.
BAGLEY -- A 43-year-old Bagley man faces a vehicular homicide charge on claims he struck another man with a sport utility vehicle and told his passengers to pretend they didn’t see anything early on Sunday morning. Elmer William Thompson appeared Tuesday in Clearwater County District Court on the charge and an additional felony count of failing to stop for a collision, injury or death. Witnesses told investigators Thompson was driving his Chevy Tahoe on a rural road early Sunday at the time it collided with Russell Marvin Auginaush, 35, of Naytahwaush, Minn.
A 43-year-old Crookston woman is dead after the motorcycle she was on crashed into a deer Saturday near Crookston, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's office responded to the crash at about 8:45 p.m. Saturday on County Road 57, about 1 mile east of County Road 13, near Gentilly, Minn., according to a news release. Corey Reitmeier, 44, Crookston, driver of the 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle, was transported to Riverview Health, Crookston, for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The woman, Wendy Reitmeier, was pronounced dead at the scene.
ST. PAUL – New or expanding businesses in Greater Minnesota can apply for grants up to $100,000 to train workers in new jobs through the Job Training Incentive Program administered by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). Applications will be accepted beginning Oct. 15 and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to businesses that meet eligibility requirements.

MANKATO, Minn. -- A group of genetically rare bison has been released into a Minnesota state park. Minneopa State Park near Mankato is the new home of 11 bison largely free of genetic markers that would come from cross-breeding with cattle. Less than 6 percent of the half-million bison in North America have such genetics.
ERSKINE, Minn. -- An Erskine, Minn., teenager died Friday morning after a car rolled several times in Polk County. The Minnesota State Patrol reported a 1995 Ford Escort was eastbound at about 7:05 a.m. on County Road 13 when it approached the curve and the driver overcorrected. The car caught the shoulder and went off the road. The crash killed Cody E. Piche, 19.
